President sending mixed signals — and more letters to the editors

President sending mixed signals

As we finish listening to the presidential address, my review is that the President gave a largely uncertain speech.

The majority of the address talked about why Congress should act on his military authorization resolution, but at the same time he says he will go with Putin's proposal.

I think the parts of the address about military force were politically motivated, and basically rebuked Congress for even thinking about voting no on his proposal.

I think he would like to go with Putin's plan, but I'm not sure he believes it will work. So largely as we move forward after this address, it sounds like the president doesn't know what way we are going.

JOSHUA ANDERSON, Knoxville

Where are Obama's leadership skills?

We have a no win situation in Syria.

If we use a surgical attack as the president is proposing, we will just be poking a stick at Russia and Iran. If we do nothing, which we have been doing, we lose credibility, which we have.

When our president "drew a line" not to be crossed, he is like the schoolyard bully with a chip on his shoulder daring someone to knock it off. Well, Assad has knocked the chip off and Mr. Obama still hasn't done anything.

Now the President has told Assad that he is going to attack (if diplomacy fails), but hasn't, giving him plenty of time to relocate his stockpile of deadly gas to locations under schools, hospitals and mosques.

The President says he has the authority to act, yet he is asking Congress if he can. Mr. Obama is on prime-time TV making a case to us, the people, who know he won't do anything.

Is this leadership?

I-75 crosses are a blessing

A letter writer of Sept. 8 is nearing a heart attack over those three lovely crosses on I-75.

He is "repulsed" by them. The rest of us are blessed by them! Has the writer ever read the first amendment to the U.S. Constitution? Of course not! That guarantees freedom of religion and speech.

The writer's only remedy is to campaign for the repeal of the Bill of Rights!

Some folks don't like jazz, rap, or Dixieland music. Others abhor classical. Their solution is simple: tune in to what they like, and tune out all the rest. There are many things that bother a lot of people, but they are not morbidly obsessed by them.

I am personally appalled at any self-respecting man showing his face in public with an ugly beard, a grotesque goatee, or a ponytail.

We all have hundreds of signs, ads, and slogans "thrust in our faces" every day. We live with it!

The letter writer's problem is with himself, his hatred of Christians, his self-centered life, his inability to live in a diverse world, and "I'm-right you- are -wrong" attitude. What a sad life.

Terrorists didn’t change America

This 9/11, American citizens throughout the country engaged in various activities to honor the victims of that fateful day in 2001 when our impenetrable America was violated. A vain attempt to thwart the American morale. The attackers knew not that we are a people fortified by the hatred thrown at us.

What better way for such a people, teeming with merited principles of justice, to commemorate the victims of 9/11, than to give life to another in their honor? Not only give life to another, but in fact, give life to up to three others, by donating blood.

For the past two years, the campaign “Muslims for Life,” launched by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, has been doing just that in its annual blood drives in honor of 9/11 victims. Last year, 11,170 units of blood were collected, and this year, their goal is to collect 12,000; this act will, thus, not be merely another of talk and verbal commemoration, but of a wholly incomparable physical, tangible form of commemoration that gives each one of us the opportunity to champion of the sanctity of human life.

Attack could release gases

So much has been said about the U.S.A. potentially hitting Syria with military weapons because of their use of chemical gases on their own people. But there are two points that I have not heard.

First, if we hit Syrian facilities where they store these gases, how can we be sure that these gases will not be loosed into the atmosphere and kill others. If winds in that part of the world are similar to those in this part of the world, those gases could travel eastward toward Iran, India, China and other countries. It could possibly go into the high atmospheric winds and be scattered over all the world.

Secondly, is it worst to kill people with gases than explosives and rounds of ammunition? What’s the difference if people are killed? I believe that more people have been killed in Syria with explosives and ammunition.

Are we going to take military action because our leader(s) have shot their mouths off and have to follow up, or is there serious reason for wanting to stop killings?

Unions provide services, too

I don’t understand all of the uproar against the VW plant wanting to have a work council that might include the Auto Workers Union.

There are a lot of labor unions in Chattanooga and we should be thankful. The Plumbers & Pipefitters, the Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, etc.

They not only collect union dues from their members but make sure they are well trained and know the different building codes.

Would you rather have your buildings built by a skilled worker, who had been schooled for an average of 5 years or one trained on the job only and who has learned only what their superior has taught them?

UPS is a union shop and there were no problems bringing those jobs to the Chattanooga area. Most trucking firms and even the railroads are union.

We should keep our noses out of VW’s business and let them do what they feel is necessary for their employees and company.

Gerald Whitely, you've been watching too much propaganda teevee. Apparently the Syrian situation has been solved through diplomacy, not bombs as you chickenhawks are always gung-ho to send other people's children to another unnecessary war. The right-wing hawks have their panties in a wad because we didn't just start bombing innocent men women and children like in Iraq. That's what LEADERSHIP is Gerald, not just blasting away before we have any allies or verified reason. No more cowboys in the White House, for you this time, get over it.

Annie, do you really believe any of us on the right want to go into Syria? Think again, most Americans don't want to get involved in this civil war, seems the only ones that do are in the WH. The problem is Obama opened his mouth last year when he should have kept it shut. He knew he couldn't get Congress to go along so he said he didn't need them, when he was criticized for that statement he changed his mind but still said he could do whatever he pleased. No matter what anyone says you take the opportunity to speak hatefully of the right. Last I was aware this is still America and the right have just as much of a right to freely speak as the left.

I do hope diplomacy works, but to trust Putin is foolish. That being said Obama, did put the country in a difficult position when he opened his mouth last year. I am aware you don't watch TV but all the stations carried that speech he made last year and we did hear the red line being drawn by Obama even though now he wants to say he didn't draw the line. That is called double talk. We are also aware all your info seems to be from the internets very left blogs.

Facts change degage, and responsible people change with them. I would hate to be held to every statement I made last year, when things clearly have changed in a year's time. I've seen them all over my news magazines, from Lindsey Graham to John McCain, to Rumsfeld (now that's a source of leadership, lol) that we need to bomb, bomb, bomb, that's what makes us amurikans and "exceptional".

And another thing, you need to quit making 'ass'umptions about where I get my news and information, because you have no idea. I'll tell you one thing, I don't get it from those chickenhawks and treasonous, know-nothing talking heads over at the Fake News Channel aka Fox.

Annie, Yes I know since last year you stated you don't watch TV except once in awhile at a neighbors. And yes I am aware McCain and Graham are advocating helping the rebels but most of us don't approve of that. Guess what I don't get my info from those chickenhawk ,treasonous know-nothing talking heads over at PMSNBC. Some of them don't know their azz from a hole in the ground. evidently you don't get your info from either since you don't watch TV.

Mr. Parnell, how absurd can you be? "The rest of us" do NOT feel "blessed" by a trio of stupid tin (or plastic?) crosses looming over the freeway. Maybe that works for you, but please don't assume you speak for "the rest of us."

More appropriate than giant crosses would have been a giant fundy evangelist (think Hagee, Hinn, and Osteen) reaching into an old lady's purse taking her Social Security check and yelling, "praise Jesus for your seed money!" then buying a jet, mansion, and vacation home.

JACK PARNELL, I am that letter writer of whom you speak. I thought I would take some time out from my "sad life" to respond to you. If I am unable to live in a diverse world, as you say, then what about you? It's pretty clear that my opposition to your "lovely crosses" has gotten your undies all in a wad. I was simply stating my opinion, as we are all free to do (Umm, yes, I am vaguely familiar with the 1st Amendment, thank you), and since my opinion does not agree with yours you accuse me of living a "self-centered life,” being unable “to live in a diverse world,” and having an "I'm-right you-are-wrong attitude." Wow... I'm all of that, just because I happen not to like your ugly stinking crosses and I take the time to express my opinion about them? I'd say that you are the one who has a problem, sir, about being able to live in a diverse world.

As for the erection of those crosses being protected by the Bill of Rights: well, it’s one thing for a person or persons to express themselves or to practice their religion, but we are talking about 100’ – 120’ hunks of metal dominating the skyline, constructed by vain and arrogant Christian zealots who think that it’s perfectly okay for them and their like-minded believers such as yourself to thrust the tacky symbols of their faith upon the rest of the public in such ostentatious fashion, assuming all the while that everyone should see them in the same way that you see them. That is not simply a matter of exercising your freedom of religion; that is contemptible conceit.

BTW, I do not hate all Christians. Even though I'm an atheist myself I nevertheless respect those who call themselves Christians and quietly live their lives in spreading the love to all people without judging others. It is just those narrow minded knuckle dragging Bible-thumping crazies who call attention to themselves with the outward display of their "holiness" (as in gaudy gargantuan crosses and their preachy pronouncements of those they deem to be sinners) that I take exception to. And if my expressions of disagreement with them indicate a sad life to you, well, so be it. What you think of me doesn't interest me in the least. Anyway, if you are so easily appalled at the mere sight of a man with a beard, goatee, or a pony tail it's pretty clear that you have some serious issues of your own to contend with.

The Bible-Thumpers expect those santimonius crosses will cause "sinners" to leap from their vehicles, prostrate themselves on I-75, give their lives to an imaginary savior, throw money to some church for more outlandish symbols of ignorance, brain-wash their children with creation myths, abandon science for superstition, adopt the bigotry and mental gyrations of Bible literalism, before buying a six pack of beer and a lap dance since they're now "saved."

Please people...P-L-E-A-S-E! GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT!! If You are going to represent Yourself on this site as a credible 'fact' giver...GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT!

The tallest of the three Crosses (the middle Cross representing the one on which Jesus Christ was Crucified for the sins of the world)is 125 feet tall. Not 100', Not 110', Not 120', but, 'Read My Lips!' 125 feet tall! O-n-e-H-u-n-d-r-e-d-T-w-e-n-t-y-F-i-v-e Feet tall! Please people, what is wrong with You? Get it right, get it straight!

The middle Cross stands 125 feet tall and is flanked by two 100 foot tall Crosses. They are constructed of tapered steel and painted white with a twenty five year rated jet airplane quality paint. The three Crosses are surrounded by a large Prayer Walk highlighting the steps Jesus took up to His death and culminating at an empty tomb commemorating His Resurrection. The Crosses will be illuminated with LED lighting every night over The Crossing Church campus and over Interstate I-75 for ALL who pass by. Some people may mistake the glorious tremendous burst of light as the airport, or, Hamilton Place Mall, so, good, distinct signage is suggested for these entities. So please consider helping with the costs of this vital Ministry.

Orr, yesterday you claimed that you were a mental health therapist and you invited questions about your credentials. I asked questions, so far you've not answered them as you said you would.

Again, you've made claims about credentials. Last time is was scientific credentials you claimed and now it's credentials as a mental health therapist. Again you've failed to provde the answers you said you would.

Do you have delusions? Are you a pathological liar? Are you you mentally disturbed? Are you unable to stop your lying?

Why would anyone believe you? Does your god encourage liars?

For someone who claimes the truth you have difficulty with it.

You're still not answering the questions you invited, Orr. You've posted the same thing again, but that's not answering the questions.

It's just your typical response when you've been called out for your continual evasions and prevarications.

Here's a direct quote from your posts. "having been a therapeutic counselor for a major Chattanooga mental health center, I have listened to scores of individual heterosexual individuals."

You wrote that. You stated that as fact. You then invited questions about your career as a therapist.

Here are the questions again for the third time.

"In what field is your degree? What discipline of psychology? What did you do as counselor? What did you promote as the best psychological tact? Were you licensed by the state in which you were employed as a counselor? Why aren't you practicing as a "therapist" now?

Orr, answer the questions above. Simple questions should have simple answers. Your evasions are not proof or evidence.

Reread the questions. Someone with your "qualifications" should be able to give succinct answers.

You are the one who started this by stating you were/are a mental health therapist. Either answer the questions or your silence and evasions will again be evidence of your lies.

daytonsdarwin, You can't possibly know how sleepy i am. I went to work at 7:45 p.m. after having no sleep on Wednesday. I did not get home until after 8:00 this morning and, as is obvious, i am still awake, just trying to get in one good cup of coffee and hit the sack. I am not avoiding, prevaricating, fantasying, or anything else like that. Right now though...i have paid my dues working all night without any reserve of sleep. And with that, i usually don't get to keep a copper penny that I earn. Everybody in my Family seems to always have my money spent for me, before i even go pick up my cotton-picking pay check. Forget it for now, I am going to bed, and that's it!!! (after i have my cup of coffee I've been craving all night). Bye.......

Orr, you have proved once again that you are a compulsive liar. You have continually made excuses for why you never answer challenges to any of the credentials you claim.

You are not a man of your word, honest, or scientifically literate.

Again you have been called out for a showdown you suggested and again you choose to hide in the shadows of one excuse after another.

You are an embarrassment to yourself, a clown, and quite simply living a life of delusions and public lies.

My sympathies to whatever family you may have who suffer for your continual public humiliation brought about by your own actions.

Just face it Orr. You're a liar. You're either mentally ill or have the ethics of a slug. Which is it?

Does your church know how batshi! crazy you are? Do they know how you misrepresent yourself?

Man up, Orr, if you consider yourself a man. Or are you lying about that as well?

Are you going to continue to hide behind your pitiful excuses for not posting your credentials? For not posting answers to the simply questions you asked for?

It's up to you to prove your assertions. However, going on your past record of lying and mental abberations, I'm not expecting a reply. Just more of the same wacko BS you always post, with the same tired and lame excuses you've always used.

The shame is all yours. You caused it — you own it.
