Soup's On!

about Clay Bennett...

The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. After brief stints as a staff artist at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Fayetteville (NC) Times, he went on to serve as the editorial cartoonist for the St. Petersburg Times (1981-1994) and The Christian Science Monitor (1997-2007), before joining the staff of the ...

The US has never experienced a weaker recovery than the present so-called recovery nor invested so much new debt in trying to revive the economy. There is barely a pulse.

We are likely at the end of growth as we have known it. If so, debt re-payment will become extremely difficult and default will become the rule. That portends a rough patch that could easily last a decade while we struggle to regain our footing.

Watch aggregate energy consumption for clues to the direction of growth. Energy is what brought us up and energy consumption will also reflect our retreat, IMO.

The soup has no meat and vegetables, looks cold and is impossible to eat with a fork. Very appropriate depiction of the economy.

The economy can't grow with jobs falling short of the number of new employable. Only 63% of those eligible for work have a job and the 63% is distorted by those holding two jobs. A frightening fact is those in Washington know if people knew the facts things would worsen quicker. The stock market is not an accurate measure of the economy for 90%+ of Americans. An increased confiscation of money from those spending which increases demand/consumption that boost the economy will have a dampening affect. Energy independence and reduced demand for energy due to conservation is a major need to grow the U.S. economy.

An increase the wealth creating manufacturing sector is essential to have a significant increase in American's considered in the middle class which is the heart of the U.S. economy. Leadership does not walk the talk in this regard. Taxes and regulation beyond those necessary discourage rather than encourage manufacturing.

You are a kook!

You talk and reason like a kook. You are all over the map. You live in an environmental kook world, you drive a kook de ville (Smart car, what an oxymoron), you walk a lot but not for health reasons but to use less energy before it is all gone ( I think you are just a tightwad), you worship the earth, hate Israel, criticize the U. S. while you live in Canada and of course you are far left and a Socialist and I imagine you wear a pony tail.

In your first paragraph, you don't mention the debt meister Owebama who tried to spend but failed by way of HIS and YOUR Socialist policies of government job creation (another oxymoron).

Your second paragraph is an attempt at erudition but is instead Liberal gibberish. If you and Owebama and the rest of you Socialist would leave the private sector alone there would be growth and an economic recovery and debt reduction.

SPENDING CAUSES DEBT, NUCANUCK! SPENDING CAUSES DEBT, NUCANUCK!

Your last paragraph is monumental hypocrisy. Our country is prosperous because we use MORE energy than anyone else. Energy that drives machinery is much more efficient than hand labor nucanuck. People in third world countries with poor economies walk and bicycle and Moped and wash clothes by hand and spend hours preparing food and they themselves become beasts of burden rather than trucks and trains and machinery. You and your fellow Liberal Socialist kooks would have us use much less energy in the "aggregate" (why use "total" when a bigger word will do) which surely would weaken our economy.

Energy use rate is the first indicator of economic growth. Energy use is affected first, so changes in energy use can be used to demonstrate health or lack of health in the economy. How do I know? My brother is a harbor pilot in an industrial port that is mostly oil and natural gas facilities. They see these changes before they are reflected in durable good sales, housing markets, employment numbers or anything else. This effect is more prominent in the US, as our economy is much more dependent on energy. Nucanuck's comment was not an "environmental" statement; from your criticism you apparently interpreted it as such. He simply stated that to watch the energy use is to see the first signs of the economic recovery slowing or floundering.

conman,

I'm not sure if I am a kook, but I am an old goat who reads and thinks a lot about how we humans interact with each other and our environment. I have thoughts, not answers, about what we might do to improve the human condition.

When I look at an energy consumption graph I see constraints ahead as evermore of the seven billions of our world want what we have. I believe that total energy supply will take the shape of a bell curve and that we are at least near the apogee of that curve. If true, cheap energy is now in our rear view mirror. We can no longer simply stick a straw in the ground and have oil flow. No other energy source yet found can easily replace oil. Expensive oil acts as a road block to growth.

The US has been consuming less oil for several years, also driving fewer miles. Is that due to a temporary economic condition or is that the beginning of a new trend? We don't yet know, but it has continued through what has been called a recovery phase.

It certainly appears that the creditor nations will continue to grow and the debtor nations will continue to stall. The creditor nations will be better able to pay higher energy prices. The US has become an energy hog because energy was so cheap during the maximum growth years. An impending necessary energy diet probably means an end to growth for the US. Am I wrong? Have at me.

The quest to save energy on a personal level or to move to more green forms of energy consumption should be done to achieve personal savings.

I have made many such choices that has me reaping the rewards of enjoying far lower utility bills and spending less for gasoline.

conservative, it is easy to see why you hide behind your computer. I truly cannot remember the last time you offered a comment that could be considered being hospitable to another soul in this forum.

You once asked me what church would allow me to be a member.

I wonder what kind of church it is that you attend that has caused you to become bitter towards others in your interaction with them.

You inspire no one to seek on any level, that which you portray to be your form of Christianity.

If there is one resounding theme that Jesus left all of us here on Earth, that has been documented very well in that Bible you use as a tool of condemnation, it is a theme of immense love and respect for everyone, no matter their faults, their sins, or the status of their personal beliefs.

You're very good at keeping a list of ready-made scriptural references of condemnation as was written by others who claimed to be empowered to speak for God and his Son, but you rarely refer to the words of Christ himself.

I am a Christian because I try to emulate Christ on a daily basis. I fail like everyone else at times to do that, but I make course corrections all the time, like every other sinner.

You come across in this forum as a man with a heart made of steel.

I hope you wake up to some realization that you are in need of a course correction of your own some day.

You don't hate evil. You hate people you consider to be evil. There's a big difference.

"God has convicted me of using much of the Scripture that I have wanted to use on you."

"This is a public forum and you are a blasphemer, a deceiver, a liar and an anti-Christ. I feel compelled to confront you with your evil so that you may not deceive others."

Good luck in your quest to convince others to any opinion you hold near and dear.

"You espouse the same false doctrine as false teachers who will receive the greater condemnation."

Again Sir, your opinion is of no consequence.

Until the day comes that you can stand up and announce your true name in this forum without fear of retribution from those you have publicly condemned in the name of God while thumping your cherry-picked Bible, I'm sorry to inform you that you are just another inciteful comment ladeling internet troll, hiding behind a computer, lapping up that which you create on your keyboard.

After the spill I bought one thousand shares of BP at around $30 per share they are now over $40 per share and pays a 7.2% dividend on my cost basis. That is better than penny's on the dollar. Conoco was sold at $25 per share about 12 years ago, that thousand shares is now near $70 per share and pays an 11% dividend on the initial cost basis. Kinder Morgan pipe lines is similar and pays a similar dividend. I will keep taking that kind of penny on the dollar. Sir, there are at least five people in this forum who know who I am.

I involuntarily made the news this past January, when my Niece and her husband were killed in a horrible car crash. I made reference to their deaths, and a couple of people made the connection;

"You therefore should use your real name when you comment if you are not a hypocrite on the matter."

You're quite a tap-dancer, in those waffle shoes you wear so well.

My point being that most people in this nation have not built their wealth via an energy thirsty America.

I appreciate you admitting your post was not totally accurate, I wasn't calling you out on it I thought there was something I didn't understand. The fact is a young person, under 40 and better if under 30 would be amazed at the wealth they could create by investing $100 per month in good stocks that pays dividends and reinvest the dividends with zero commissions as many brokers or companies will do. Use a discount broker and don't pay mutual fund fees and regular broker commissions.

The two best wealth builders have been and will continue to be the markets and real estate. Too may expect a miracle and panic out if there is a dip instead of seeing it as an opportunity to buy more cheaper. Once a person reaches 58 years of age they need to shift to secure investments and protect their principle if they need the money to live on. Most people attempting to own a business fail and lose everything, some are successful.

alprova I agree that many have not built personal wealth through energy investments. But, energy thirsty is not an accurate label although conservation is not where it should be. Energy supports many of the better life activities in America. Actually American consumption per capita has not increased but demand is increasing big in emerging market countries including China, India and others where the middle class is growing while in the U.S. the middle class is shrinking. This is not a good thing and needs to change. Domestic energy sources and supply can contribute to that. Utilizing the more than 1000 years of known reserves could make the U.S. the major source of oil and gas which creates good jobs, balances trade deficits, protects the dollar as the world currency, reduces middle east and north Africa leverage. Utilize current resources while new sources such as the ultimate safe underground nuclear reactors and natural gas combustion engines are developed plus other clean sources. These will come from the private sector, not the government. Governments may impede progress but seldom are governments the source of creativity and economic innovation.

Cold soup with no meat and potatoes and a fork to eat the liquid with is very descriptive of our economic dilemma.

Well Clay, at least it’s not porridge and one chop stick. I like tomato soup, porridge – not as much. And its lunch time anyway.

Enraptured by greed, the effects of decades of deregulation enabled a corporate coup to take place in ‘our’ country. The wealthy elites then progressed to gang rape this country. Focused solely on power and profits, they care nothing of patriotism or the economic condition of their countrymen. "A rising tide lifts all boats" being long forgotten. Their propaganda so successful (suitably illustrated in a 10:17 post) they inveigled huge numbers to act in direct conflict to their interests.

It should be plain to everyone by now that as a product of this corporate overthrow, every person in ‘our’ government (without exception) are nothing more than marionettes whose every move is done by, for, and controlled by, the ever vigilant corporate masters.

Until we as a people wrest control of our govt., our resources and our economies from these corporate parasites there’ll be little in the form of true recovery.

fairmon,

Your economic/energy assessment seems solid until the "1000 years of known reserves" assumptions. While the US is enjoying a rise in production for the first time since ANWAR and those increases may grow for several more years, the hard truth is that the US tight oil/fracked oil/shale oil will soon maximize production because the new well depletion rate is so high (around 50%) that the only way to continue to expand production is through exponential increases in drilling...which is not possible and not going to happen.

Maybe there will be another game-changer break-through, but as things now stand, the US new-found oil surge will be something akin to ANWAR and give us a relatively stable period of relief before we return to diminishing North American production.

I think that the US should look at this non-conventional oil as a gift and an opportunity to reorganize the US energy consumption habits toward far more conservative energy use before it is imposed upon us brutally by the realities of the marketplace. The dreams of ever expanding energy use in a finite world are neither realistic nor long-term sustainable. When do we begin a responsible course? Why not now?

It was Alprova whose niece died in a traffic accident.

With a couple of exceptions, everyone here is not in danger of going postal.

Conservative is the exception, though the greatest danger he poses is eventually his head will explode. But not to fear, there's nothing inside so no danger of schrapnel.

Between Conservative and Orr, who perpetually look for homosexuals, it's difficult to choose who is the most insane fundamentalist. Both are good for laughs.

If you've ever seen faith-healing TV shows where Bible-Thumping performers do the dying cockroach quivers, flap their arms as if to take-off, talk gibberish, and do the Curly shuffle, those people look downright intelligent next to Conservative and Orr.

We keep them around for entertainment purposes. They are continually looking for others to join their Jerk Circle for Jesus, but being unsuccessful they take turns being the pivot man. Both have Gaydar and haunt public restrooms looking for sin and satisfaction, and have found it necessary to wear bibs to keep the drool off their flowing white robes.

If you have any questions about homosexuals, Conservative and Orr have tons of reference materials they constantly review on an hourly basis. I'm hoping for their sake that one day they can cohabitate in a bigger closet, play dress-up, and share their love.

Other than those two, it's a free-for-all of opinions.

Geologist now say North America has more known reserves than all the middle east, north Africa and some other countries combined. In fact the analysis I got says an estimated 2040 years at current consumption rates.

Many, many good reasons exist to reduce consumption and seek good safe alternatives and they are being developed. Did you happen to see the 19 yo prodigy that built a reactor in his garage and has an active development of a safe nuclear reactor? The possibilities are numerous and they are not wind mills and battery cars. Why is it no one ever complains about or mentions the fuel consumed by planes and boats?

I have a sneaky suspicion that i know shultz personaly and am being played!!

If you think you might know this “”piece of work” and that he may be joking you should really contact him. What he is engaged in is not a joke and he could be on the verge of being in a world of hurt from legal authorities.

The soup last longer and everyone gets a bite using the fork with one hand to get all of the water downed ketchup they can. If this is an economic recovery then may we never have a downturn in the middle class production segment. We are building an economy of services and serving each other, sooner or later that loop gets smaller and drops off a lot of people.

A "recovery" bouyed by printing money is equivalent to economic suicide. It will be some kind of miracle if we do not experience an epic financial collapse in less than a year. It is time to exit the system before your savings suffer the plight of Cyprus and Poland.

Well Plain Truth, as it happens it's really neither one. I go by Rick. Never liked Dick and Richard's too formal. Your pardon if I sounded a little annoyed there. It's because I was. When people who have NO idea what the meaning of the word civility is, and like to bully other people get on my case, I get REALLY hostile REALLY quick.

With all due respect, RSchultz, you made the first physical threat. Jesse was being obnoxious and profane, but you were the first to cross that line (at 3:50). Please be careful. You'll get yourself banned quickly, and maybe even investigated.

I don't feel you were that aggressive-I've faced worse. But regardless. He made the first physical threat. Be careful that you don't threaten in response.

Hi Ikeithlu...How are the kids doing? Everybody getting back in the groove? I am genuinely touched by your concern for me. I honestly wish there were more people like you in this world. It would be such a BETTER place. Don't worry about Jesse. He is indeed an obnoxious, profane, unintelligent bully and I know I shouldn't have let him get to me because that actually puts him one up on me for allowing him to make me angry enough to want to
physically punish him. For your sake, I will do my best to ignore him in the future. It gets very hard to do that especially with a hydrocephalic gorilla who probably stays in an alcoholic stupor 80-90% of the time, but I promise you I will try. How is your class load? High percentage of trouble makers or not too bad? Unburden thyself dear lady. How ARE things?

I am retired from teaching after 30 years. Of course, I had no troublemakers in my classes (I was the school's disciplinarian and a tyrant-kids knew better than to cut up in my classes) and my student load rarely exceeded 64 total, or 4 sections of 16. Thanks for asking! Jesse is fine-just tune him out if he gets a little crazy.

That's right you DID tell me you had retired. Sorry, I sometimes forget things. Jesse is more than just a little crazy. He's balls to the ball certifiable. But I promised I would leave him alone and I will. He actually thinks that a picture of him wearing a smelly Gi with a black belt will impress me. I truly did laugh out loud when he said that. ANYBODY can get a picture like that made on Okinawa for $5.00. Take care dear lady and do have a wonderful evening. Exit chuckling.

fairmon,

If the EROEI to extract energy reserves from the earth are too low the size of the reserves becomes irrelevant. That is the case with most of the western shale, the cost of extraction exceeds the value. There is a lot of misunderstanding about reserves and what will actually help our energy future. The reserves you refer to are not a game changer, but rather a distraction that keep us from doing what we must.

Certainly there may be a technology breakthrough, we can all hope for that, but based on what we now know with certainty, we are looking at energy constraints within the next two decades. If we fail to prepare for it now, we could face rationing, brownouts and possible chaos.

Most prefer not to believe this so they don't, but it is all information that is readily available from the best engineering minds on the planet. Useful sites would be peakoilbarrel.com and Resilience.org if you would like to build a base of solid information about energy possibilities.

RShultz210,

If you get Conservative against you, he'll call down the wrath of Gawd to turn your tap water into Mogen David, have six grasshoppers and a skinny locust eat your pot plants, have the Holy Spook leave flaming bags o' crap on your doorstep, throw Bible verses at you until you reach for a Xanax and vodka martini, and he'll personally come to your house and do the Westboro Baptist Church Gay Dance in your yard while reciting Leviticus backwards and for a Sunday morning grand finale flagellate himself with his homemade cat-o'-nine-tails while singing "Jesus Loves Me Long Time." I always close the door before he passes the collection plate.

It's quite a show, but scares the kids and dogs.
