UTC women's golf third in Cardinal Cup

Led by top-10 individual finishes from Jordan Britt and Emily McLennan, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's golf team finished third Tuesday at Louisville's Cardinal Cup tournament. Louisville won the 12-team event by 22 strokes with an 859 aggregate for 54 holes as Simpsonville, Ky. UTC finished at 901, 20 shots behind Kansas and four ahead of Middle Tennessee State. Britt was ninth at 4-over-par 220, and McLennan closed with a second consecutive 73 and tied for 10th at 222. The Mocs' Agathe Sauzon was 25th at 227, and Isabella Loza tied for 36th at 232.

• The UTC men's golf team progressively moved up in the Golfweek Conference Challenge and finished in a tie for 11th out of 15 teams Tuesday at Spirit Hollow Golf Course in Burlington, Iowa. Led by Chris Robb's 3-under-par 69, the Mocs followed up their 305 and 297 rounds with a 293. Davis Bunn tied for 37ith individually at 223, while Robb and Brooks Thomas shot 224s with Benni Weilguni at 228.

• The Lee University men's golf team set a tournament record of 857 for 54 holes (285-287-287) in winning the Coastal Georgia Fall Invitational for the second year in a row Tuesday at the Sea Island Golf Club's Retreat Course at St. Simons Island. Three Flames made the all-tournament team -- freshman Shea Slyvester and sophomore Taylor Davis tying for second individually at 214 and junior Hunter Vest placing fourth at 215 -- while senior Matt Emery came in at 219.

Tennis

• Manker Patten professional Wesley Cash of Chattanooga won both in singles and doubles in the USTA Men's 55 Grass Court national tournament Tuesday at Forest Hills, N.Y. A 5 seed in singles, Cash beat James D'Angelo of Michigan 6-1, 6-1 in the round of 32. The top-seeded pair of Cash and Michael Tammen of Portland, Ore., won 6-4, 6-2 in the round of 16 against New York residents Mark Hoestra and Steven Underwood.

Auto Racing

• Chattanooga truck driver Larry Allen II won the Super Pro class and $1,500 Saturday night at the Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip with a final run of 5.55 seconds on a 5.54 dial in a 468-cubic-inch dragster. Justin Tipton was second with a 4.94-second burst on a 4.93 dial in a 632 Chevy dragster prepared by George Gossett. Steven Holloway of Tunnel Hill won the Foot Brake class in a 1966 Plymouth with an 8.20-second run on a 8.20 dial; Ben Frederick of Centerville, Ga., was second. Earl Stanley of Richmond, Ky., won the Heads-Up 275 Outlaw class in a 1988 Mustang, with Ringgold's Shawn Bryson second in a '92 Mustang, and Steven Crouse of Hxson won the Heads-Up Street class in a '98 Trans Am with Tom Noran of South Carolina second in a '72 Plymouth Duster. Mattie Keener was the Junior Dragster winner with Ryan Dennis second, and Cynthia Warnock had the night's low elapsed time (4.56 seconds) and top speed (149.50 mph) in a dragster prepared by her father, Ronnie Warnock.

• Colby Kilgore won by inches over Tanner Works in a thrilling Crate Late Model 25-lap race Saturday at North Georgia Speedway that left third-place finisher Jeff Smith disqualified for unsportsmanlike conduct and reckless endangerment, according to a report from the track. Other victors were Johnny Cloer Jr. in Limited Late Model Steelhead, David Rogers in Econo Hobby, Tony Walston in Modified Hobby, Darrell Owenby in Sportsman and Jimmy Plumlee in Pony.

Baseball

• The Chattanooga Cyclones K baseball team went 3-1 at the Southern Wood Bat Fall Troy University Invitational this past weekend. Ricky Vaughn pitched a two-hitter in a 12-0 defeat of the Alabama Commodores, when Hunter Mercer and Seth Hickman each had two hits and contributed to the scoring and Aaron Granger and Hunter Oliver each had a two-run hit and scored a run. Justin Glover was the winning pitcher in an 8-2 victory over the Alabama Bluesox, and Corey Edgemon had two hits, two RBIs and two runs, Mercer drove in two runs and Oliver had two hits, a run and an RBI. Mercer tripled, doubled, drove in two runs and scored two in support of Winston Whitener's and Granger's pitching in a 7-3 win over the Rockdale A's. In a 5-3 loss to Viper Baseball, Mercer had two hits and two RBIs and Edgemon stole two bases and scored twice. The Cyclones V team beat the Commodores and the A's and lost 4-0 to Viper Baseball and 5-2 to the Bluesox. Palmer Steventon and Blake Windstead got the pitching wins, and Kaleb Hill, Hayden Moss, Steventon, Logan Haga and Chantz Placzek were batting leaders.
