Chattanooga's Wesley Cash is in the semifinals today in singles in the USTA Men's 55 Grass Court national tourmanent at Forest Hills, and the Manker Patten professional and Michael Tammen from Portland, Ore., are one win away from their second doubles national championship of the year. They also could meet for the singles final. Cash and Mark Vines of Lynchburg, Va., won the 55s Golden Slam last year, and Cash has a chance to repeat that with a new partner. He and Tammen are seeded No. 1 and beat Roman Ramirez of Leon, Mexico, and Rollin Rhone of Culver City, Calif., 6-1, 6-3 on Thursday. The indoor champs face fourth-seeded Richard Barrett of Deatsville, Ala., and Jeffrey Winkler of St. Petersburg, Fla., who edged the No. 2 seeds 7-6(2), 6-7(4), 6-2 in the other semifinal. Cash, a 5 seed in singles, joins No. 1 Tammen and the third and fourth seeds in the semifinals after winning 6-2, 6-3 over Rhone, a 9 seed. That was Cash's closest match yet. Today he plays No. 4 seed Peter Markes of Austin, Texas, a 7-6(3), 6-2 victor Thursday.

Golf

• Centre College junior Alyssa Brown from Chattanooga and Baylor School placed fourth with a 36-hole 157 and made the all-tournament team at the prestigious O'Brien National Invitational last week at the Warren Golf Course on the Notre Dame campus in South Bend, Ind. Centre was third in the competition featuring 10 of the top women's teams in NCAA Division III, four strokes behind second-place Olivet.

Volleyball

• Shatoya Medford and Jade Mast each served six aces and Medford added 10 digs as Tennessee Temple University won 25-21, 25-14, 25-15 in volleyball Thursday at Judson College in Marion, Ala. Victoria Smith had nine kills for Temple (7-4), and Kaylee Ginnings had 16 assists.

• Karly Newman had 14 kills and Alyne Bianchi and Savannah Nelson added 12 and 10 in Dalton State College's first home volleyball match in more than 30 years Thursday night, but the first-year program lost 25-19, 26-24, 21-25, 28-26 to Reinhardt, which is 6-3 with two wins over the Lady Roadrunners (1-6). Almost 500 spectators were at Dalton High School for the match, with Bandy Gym on the college campus undergoing renovations. "I have been involved in college athletics for over 20 years, and I have never seen a crowd that large for volleyball," said DSC athletic director Derek Waugh, a former Furman basketball star and Stetson basketball coach and assistant AD. "Tonight was a groundbreaking, special night for this institution," school president Dr. John Schwenn said.

• Payton Tipton from Cleveland High School had 23 digs and two aces in King College's 3-2 volleyball win Wednesday at UVA-Wise.
