One day after winning their second USTA Men's 55 doubles national championship in as many tries this year, Chattanooga's Wesley Cash and Michael Tammen of Portland, Ore., finished third and second in singles in the grass court tournament at Forest Hills, N.Y. Cash, one of the 5 seeds, won the third-place match 6-4, 6-1 against third seed Christopher Bennett of Marlton, N.J., Saturday, but top-seeded Tammen lost 4-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(5) to No. 4 seed Peter Markes of Austin, Texas, who beat Cash on Friday.

Softball

• Reigning Georgia Class AA pitcher of the year Madison Gossett signed this past week to continue her softball careeer with Brenau Univesity in Gainesville, Ga. The Dade County star, who led the Lady Wolverines to the state championship last season, is a two-time Best of Preps all-star selection and three-time all-region player. "I really liked how small the campus is," said Gossett, who has a 55-28 career record with a 1.85 ERA and 757 strikeouts. "The girl who showed me around said the school was great, and it was nice that everybody seemed to know everybody's name. It's kind of what I'm used to here." Gossett joins East Hamilton's Kelsey Payne as future members of the NAIA regional power.m

Soccer

• Two assists and a goal by Joel Friesen led the Covenant men's soccer team to a rain-drenched 4-1 USA South win Saturday at Ferrum, and the Lady Scots rallied to win 2-1 in overtime. Garrison Dale scored three minutes into the men's match with help from Friesen, who scored 15 minutes later from an Ian Meredith assist. Ferrum (4-4, 1-1) scored before Michael Arango closed out the first half with a goal from a Friesen assist and his own assist to Barrett Schmidt for the Scots (5-2-2, 1-1). Bethany Logan tied the women's game from a Ruth Terry assist in the 77th minute, and Anna Porch's first collegiate goal gave the Lady Scots (4-5, 2-0) the win 2:40 into extra time. Lucy Johnson made six saves.

• The Tennessee Wesleyan College men's soccer team improved to 5-3 for the season by defeating the University of the Cumberlands 3-1 on Saturday, and the Lady Bulldogs won 5-1 in the doubleheader and now are 4-4. The Bulldogs' Ryan Ejezie is the reigning Appalachian Athletic Conference offensive player of the week, while Jorge Gonzalez Giron of Bryan -- which shares first place in the league with TWC at 3-0 -- was the defensive honoree. Ejezie, a freshman midfielder, scored five goals in two AAC wins through last weekend.

• The Bryan College soccer matches scheduled for Saturday evening in Dayton against Virginia Intermont were postponed because of rain. They will be rescheduled.

• Sewanee improved to 3-3-2 in men's soccer this season with a 3-1 home win over Tennessee Temple on Friday. Ford Emerson scored midway through the first half and Chris Haberstroh and Ford Rushton made it 3-0 in the 62nd and 69th minutes before Eugene Emuze scored for the Crusaders from a Mario Paiva pass. Rushton, Griffin Smith and William White had assists for the Tigers, who outshot the visitors 23-7.

Running

• UTC sophomore Teghan Henderson won the women's title at the Georgia State Invitational cross country meet Friday evening by 18 seconds, and the Lady Mocs finished second behind Auburn while the UTC guys were third with senior Lucas Cotter also finishing third individually. Cotter's time for the 8-kilometer course was 25:33.44, and fellow Mocs Paul Stuart and Mark Cole were ninth and 11th with Matthew Marshall, Zack Darby and Austin Ethridge 16th, 19th and 20th in the five-team competition headed by Auburn and Florida A&M. Henderson did the women's 4k in 14:07.61, and teammates Rebecca Greenwall and Keeley Stewart were fifth and eighth in 14:44.00 and 15:14.49.

• Local runners Geno Phillips and Jessica Marlier were the overall winners of the Raccoon Mountain Round the Rim Run 10-kilometer race Saturday morning, Phillips in 35 minutes, 26 seconds and Marlier in 37:57. Dean Thompson at 35:38 and Dianna Leun at 43:52 were the masters winners. Christopher Butler of Grant, Ala., in 19:35 won the 5k option by more than two minutes; Ellie Shelton was the female winner and eighth overall in 24:54.

Golf

• The second round of the Mercedes-Benz collegiate women's golf tournament being hosted by Tennessee this weekend in Knoxville was rained out Saturday, cutting the event to 36 holes. UTC goes into today's final round tied for seventh out of 17 teams at 292. South Carolina leads at 5-under-par 279.

General

• UTC vice chancellor and athletic director David Blackburn will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday at Finley Stadium, and the public is invited. Attendance costs $10 with a hot meal, $4 without.
