about Clay Bennett...

The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. After brief stints as a staff artist at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Fayetteville (NC) Times, he went on to serve as the editorial cartoonist for the St. Petersburg Times (1981-1994) and The Christian Science Monitor (1997-2007), before joining the staff of the ...

Ayn Rand, my favorite and most-challenged-by atheist. (Karl Marx outsonnetted Shakespeare's hymns to Narcissus and Isaac Asimov entertained and informed.)

Let's set the cartoon in context. The ship of state is headed for financial rocks, spending more than it takes in. Senator Cruz thinks it should turn around. He's right. And he's insisting. The vast left-wing conspiracy of complacency needs more shaking up than it's gotten so far. Quit pretending things are OK--or admitting, We have no solution but we don't like yours--and face the problem. The problem of bureaucratic greed and selfishness. The problem of promising more than we can afford to pay for. The problem of ignoring the constitution, of breaking the fundamental contract of America. Of improving health by subsidizing sickness. Of enriching the economy by paying people not to work. Of equalizing us by hiring IRS agents to rule us. Of ignoring the Bible, a somewhat libertarian document. Of declaring the sin of covetousness to be a virtue...

Have the "conservatives" here never met people who work hard all their lives, while being ground down to a nub by an unfair system that rewards cheaters, con-men and flim-flam artists while denying them decent health care? Hard-working Americans (not the 1%) deserve better than they are getting from the Republican Party.
We need a rational balance on the political scene. Unfortunately, we don't have it because most of the current Republican Party is drunk on the ego-manical thrill of causing a disaster.

No one can argue with that. Are you suggesting that either party is providing that? Neither party appears truly concerned that the household employment survey shows a loss of 400,000 jobs this year versus the claim of job gains based on unemployment data. Neither party addresses the fact that only 63% of those in the work force are employed, a record low. If only hard-working Americans deserve better then 37% plus the disabled and unwilling to work are SOL.

maximus, I like your post at 10:43. My sister-in-law "invaded" my house one day about 2 years ago and she started to extol the virtues of what national health insurance will do for her child with a disability; how costs would be shifted off of them. She then proceeded to tell me that "they" should cut health insurance benefits to "all smokers" under this new coming system.

I asked her if that was so even for fat cat's who pay a lot of taxes into this new system but they happen to smoke cigars as they count their obscene profits? I then proceeded to ask her what happens when the money runs out of the system and "they" decide that her child with a disability is too much of a drag on the system? She didn't mind "they" going after a group she found distasteful but when another group goes after her...well that's another story. As you indicated - no more insurance industry, far fewer doctors and rationing will become the norm. When all else fails we will see how correct Sarah Palin was when she talked about death panels.

Can’t a few white boys sexually assault a black woman anymore without people getting all wound up about it? So unfair.”

Public opinion was so harsh even from the MSM that she had to retract her writings but did not apologize to the Duke players for her false and hate filled commentary.

You mean the Amanda that was the blogger for John Edwards campaign? The one that wrote numerous anti-Religious hate pieces that got her fired.

It sure looks like alprova has finally shot himself in the foot. Did you notice how he qualified his statement:

“Sir, I assure you, I am CURRENTLY medically qualified for disability and Medicare”

He didn’t just say he was “qualified” but that he was “medically qualified”. I checked the Medicare web site yesterday and according to alprova’s recent statements about his employment he is not financially qualified.

From the Medicare web site:

In evaluating whether you are disabled, the Social Security Administration (SSA) will first look to whether you are currently working. If you are working part-time and not earning much money, you won't necessarily be denied disability benefits, but doing a substantial amount of work (such as working full-time) guarantees that you'll be denied benefits. Here's why.

As part of its definition of disability, the SSA requires that a disability claimant (applicant) be unable to perform what it calls substantial gainful activity (SGA).

What Is Substantial Gainful Activity?

Substantial gainful activity is generally work that brings in over a certain dollar amount per month. In 2012, that amount is $1,010 for non-blind disabled applicants, and $1,690 for blind applicants. If you are making more than that amount per month, the SSA figures that you must not be disabled (in their words, that you "are able to engage in competitive employment in the national economy").

What If You Own Your Own Business?

The SSA recognizes that whether a small business's net profit is over $1,010 per month isn’t necessarily a good indicator of whether you’re doing substantial gainful activity. If you are self-employed (you own your own business) and you aren't applying for disability for blindness or low vision, the SSA will try to look more closely at what you're doing for the company. The SSA will apply what it calls “The Three Tests” to determine if your business activity is SGA.

Your business activity will be considered SGA if you:

provide significant services to the business and receive a substantial income from it (the SSA has specific guidelines for defining significant and substantial)

perform work that's comparable to the work of persons without disability in your community engaged in the same or similar businesses, or

perform work that's worth $1,010 per month in terms of its value to the business or what it saves you from having to pay an employee to do the work

Or maybe his business is a losing proposition?

Commander,

In answer to your question about removing the debt ceiling, I would say that the US does not now have a debt ceiling, we have a political game that is played, but there is no real debt ceiling. The debt ceiling will continue to be raised/ignored until the US has sufficiently debauched the value of the US dollar and our creditors ask for payment in a different form. We can already see hints of that eventuality with China having struck direct trade agreements with many other important countries, bypassing the world's so-called reserve currency. Also the fact that gold has risen substantially is a reflection of dollar debasement. Gold is the anti-dollar. The world's above ground gold supply is being transferred from West to East because the eastern countries no longer want to hold US dollars as their principle reserves. Both China and Japan would sell off their US bond holdings now if it wouldn't collapse the market. They have stopped buying for the most part and have now begun to sell discretely.

But to be fair...the US is stuck! If the US pares back spending and borrowing, the mother of all collapses would occur straight away. What is going on now is just a Hail Mary pass hoping for a miracle in a game that has been lost.

Who's to blame? When the US dollar failed in 1971, the US set up a world (petro)dollar standard. We have abused that privilege for forty two years and the party is ending. We all did it! Strangely, Jimmy Carter is less guilty than the rest,IMO. When he even mentioned austerity, we cut off his head.

July 16, 2007 Or Face the End of Constitutional Democracy Impeach Now by PAUL CRAIG ROBERTS

Unless Congress immediately impeaches Bush and Cheney, a year from now the US could be a dictatorial police state at war with Iran.

Too much is going wrong for the Bush administration: the failure of its Middle East wars, Republican senators jumping ship, Turkish troops massed on northern Iraq’s border poised for an invasion to deal with Kurds, and a majority of Americans favoring the impeachment of Cheney and a near-majority favoring Bush’s impeachment. The Bush administration desperately needs dramatic events to scare the American people and the Congress back in line with the militarist-police state that Bush and Cheney have fostered.

William Norman Grigg recently wrote that the GOP is "praying for a terrorist strike" to save the party from electoral wipeout in 2008. Chertoff, Cheney, the neocon nazis, and Mossad would have no qualms about saving the bacon for the Republicans, who have enabled Bush to start two unjustified wars, with Iran waiting in the wings to be attacked in a third war.

July 16, 2007 Or Face the End of Constitutional Democracy Impeach Now by PAUL CRAIG ROBERTS

Odd that you would post that article since absolutely none of the nutcase writer’s predictions came true.

Jt6gR3hM, since your opinion of PAUL CRAIG ROBERTS is that he is a "nut case" then I assume that either you do not know how he didagreed with the free trade agreements and is capable of predicting what happened to our economy when in two wars that were not budgetted and also with the cutting off the incoming monies? Yet, why was there a deliberate doubling of the National Debt by the Cheney/Bush W. administration during their eight years and then ending up with this Republic in the 2007 deep recession and on the verge of another great depression while still fighting in the unfinished warws of Afghanistan and in Iraq, PLUS trying to eliminate TERRORIST in many other countries. If you are saying that not any of the people who were against the actions and the lies that were told in the lead up to the invasion of Iraq, and the misuse of our military while staying in Iraq for nine years did not come true or happen, what are you talking about?

degage, I'm not trying to be ornery, I'm just stating the truth. Andrew doesn't want you to know that he's the biggest hypocrite in Chattanooga. He speaks against the government "enriching the economy by paying people not to work" even as he receives unemployment and food stamps after quitting his full-time job. He won't deny this because he knows I speak the truth.
