Mike Poe advances in USGA Senior Amateur golf tournament, Neil Spitalny trailing

CASHIERS, N.C. -- Tennessee Wesleyan College basketball and golf coach Mike Poe of Athens, Tenn., advanced to the round of 32 at the USGA Senior Amateur golf tournament Monday, and Chattanoogan Neil Spitalny will continue his first match-play round today. Poe earned the No. 21 seed after stroke play and defeated Mike Greer of Birmingham 5 and 4 at Wade Hampton Golf Club. Spitalny earned the 27th seed and trailed Jim Rollefson of Wisconsin, 2-down through 12 holes, when play was suspended Monday.

• King University junior Cortnee Young from Walker Valley High School led the Tornado women's golf team to fifth place in the first round of the Tusculum College Fall Classic with her 3-over-par 75 Monday at Link Hills Country Club in Greeneville, Tenn. King shot 319 as a team; UNC Pembroke leads at 301.

Tennis

• The Chattanooga 65-plus men's 3.5 team won the USTA state championship last weekend in Knoxville. The team went 4-0 in advancing to the Southern Sectionals Dec. 6-8 in Columbus, Ga. Players include captain Tom McCullough, Corky Florek, Ron Huggins, Robert Ritchie, Steve Holder, Ed Diaz, Bruce Krebbs and Bill Johnson.

Soccer

• Covenant College junior midfielder Joel Friesen was the USA South men's soccer player of the week after compiling two goals and two assists in a 2-1 week for the Scots. He scored the first goal of a 2-1 defeat of previously unbeaten Birmingham-Southern and had two assists and the winning goal Saturday at Ferrum.

Volleyball

• Lydia Vick was credited with 12 kills and 11 digs and Kiara Govan had 38 assists as Tennessee Temple University beat visiting Oakwood University 3-1 (23-25, 25-22, 25-7, 25-17) in volleyball Monday night. Also for the Lady Crusaders, Shatoya Medford made 18 digs, Kaylee Ginnings had 14 digs and eight kills and Jade Mast had eight digs.

• The Georgia Northwestern volleyball team beat the Covenant junior varsity 3-1 (25-9, 25-13, 16-25, 25-15) and host Welch College 3-0 (25-11, 25-7, 25-21) in a tri-meet at the Nashville school school Saturday. Freshmen Victoria Sprouse and Casey Chapman had 15 and 13 kills and seven and 11 aces in the two wins for the two-year Lady Bobcats (3-6), and sophomore Holly Mount had 13 kills and four blocks.
