Eighty-six-year-old Andrew Broomfield and his wife, Arma, have been identified as the couple suffering burns Tuesday in a house fire on Kemp Drive in Brainerd.

Andrew Broomfield is listed in critical condition at the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, Ga. He has second and third degree burns to about 70 percent of his body, a news release said.

His wife was reported with burns to her hands in a release on Tuesday.

She said she had gone to church, but on the way home had stopped to buy food.

When she returned to the driveway of her home, she saw smoke and flames coming out of the den window.

She ran into the house and saw her husband in the living room chair with his clothes on fire.

She said she tried to pat the fire out with her hands and then walked her husband out of the house and had him sit in a porch chair. Neighbors then arrived and picked Broomfield up in the chair and carried him away from the burning house.

Broomfield was initially taken to Erlanger and then flown to the Augusta burn center. Arma Broomfield was treated at Erlanger for burns to her hands and released.

The damage from the fire was estimated at about $40,000 and the cause of the fire is still being investigated.
