Sequatchie County constable charged with child rape
SEQUATCHIE COUNTY, Tenn. - Sequatchie County Constable David Eugene Broome, 61, was arrested Monday by Tennessee Bureau of Investigation officers after he was indicted on child rape charges by the Sequatchie County grand jury.
According to a TBI news release, in December 2012 and January 2013 Broome, who is from Signal Mountain, allegedly had "sexual contact" with an 8-year-old girl at his home.
Broome is at Sequatchie County Jail and is being held without bond. He will appear in court Friday.
He was indicted on one count of rape of a child, according to the TBI.
Broome is president of Mountain City Service, a plumbing company based on Signal Mountain, according to the company's website.
Drive-in awarded digital projector
ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. - A drive-in movie theater in Elizabethton is one of nine across the country to receive a new digital projector that will help it stay in business.
Movie studios are phasing out 35 mm film prints, requiring theaters to convert to digital projectors at a cost of $70,000 or more per screen. Many drive-in theaters are family run operations that do most their business in the summer, and some owners say they simply can't afford to change over.
Honda Motor Co. sponsored the Project Drive-In contest to help save theaters facing closure. Last week it named five winning theaters to receive digital projectors. This week, the company named four more winners, including Elizabethton's Stateline Drive-In.
Honda says it will continue raising money for the project through the crowd funding website Indiegogo.com.
Woman bittenby rabid fox
STATESBORO, Ga. - A Statesboro woman said she's undergoing two weeks of shots after being bitten by a rabid fox.
Cathy Riccio told WTOC-TV a fox tried to attack her dog last week. When she tried intervening, the fox bit her on the ankle. Riccio said she and her dog tried running from the fox and it chased her up the deck and to the door.
Riccio's husband shot at the fox and nicked its ear before it ran away.
Bulloch County Animal Control officials searched and didn't find the fox, but did find a den in the woods near her home. Riccio said her husband fatally shot the fox when they saw it a second time. A local veterinarian tested the fox and determined it had rabies.
Kennesaw State preps for its 50th
KENNESAW, Ga. Kennesaw State University officials said the campus is gearing up to host a variety of events to celebrate its 50th anniversary.
KSU officials said Founders Week is Oct. 7-11 and will include a groundbreaking ceremony for the school's $38.7 million student recreation and activities center.
Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution G. Wayne Clough is scheduled to deliver a keynote address on the future of American public higher education during a campuswide symposium Oct. 10.
