The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. How does Ted Cruz see his one man stand strengthening the country? Emphasizing a house divided can only add to the polarization that stymies initiative from either party. What can he possibly win for the country? Maybe this is about Ted Cruz and not about America!

Nucanuck, this country is a house divided and Ted Crus didn't divide it, Obama and friends and the mainstream media did. Obama won't budge on anything then blames it on the republicans. Obama, the democrats and the republicans have all had a hand in it. You can bet, if there is a government shut down Obama and Congress and all their staff will still get paid, and you will win that bet. The leaders of the democrat party like Obama, Reid, Pelosi and others, all are wealthy and could go without pay but they won't.

I'm sure you know what principles are, you no doubt have them. Cruz was standing on his principles and what his constituents ask of him.

Obama has divided this nation more than any president ever with his my way or nothing attitude. He has never compromised with congress and lies about it being the Republicans fault when he is to blame. But when only one media outlet holds him accountable and he demonizes them what are we to expect? The liberals want a dictator and a regime not a president that follows the Constitution. And that is what we have. If obamacare is so good then why does obama and congress get subsidies to pay "their fair share", as you liberals say, to pay for their healthcare? Why did obama allow all the exemptions? Why did obama cut $800 billion form medicare to pay for obamacare? Why did obama delay most of obamacare for corporations but did not delay it for individuals? Why are liberal so stupid to blindly follow obama?

Really? Obamacare itself is a compromise! If you recall, he actually wanted a single-payer system, and he even had an alternate plan of allowing those 55 and above to enlist in Medicare. But he scrapped those ideas altogether because he knew that the Republicans would not support either one. So what did he end up putting on the table? The very plan that Republican Mitt Romney had already set in place in Massachusetts! And it likewise included a mandate, which was the BRAINCHILD OF CONSERVATIVES several years prior.

We all know that the Republicans' stated goal from day one of Obama's taking office was to make him a one-term president, and having failed at that, they still resist, defy, and obstruct him at every turn. For you to sit there and smugly claim it's all Obama's fault for dividing this nation really shows just how irrational and stupid you are. And yes, I am name-calling. There is no other word that best describes how you are acting.

I don't wish ill of anyone but for all you jerks who whine and whine and whine about how Obamacare is going to be the ruination of this country (btw, conservatives made the exact same arguments against Medicare back in the 60s that you are making now) I would love nothing more than to see how you react when you or someone in your family loses their health insurance. Some of you might still be able to afford it, even if you lost your job, but most would be like those who don't have it on account of its being so damned expensive. All you do is scream like a 2-yr. old throwing a tantrum about how evil and ill conceived it is, but you offer nothing - NOTHING - to put in its place. It is unconscionable for any nation that calls itself civilized to allow over 40 million of its citizens to have to go without health coverage, or to force anyone to go bankrupt because their medical bills are so high (and this applies to many who even have insurance). But you whining wing-nuts soothe your consciences by pretending that those who don't have it are just moochers and takers and deserve to die or suffer anyway. You guys are arrogant, pathetic, selfish SOBs. You're happy just as long as you have your little slice of the pie, and most of you didn't work any harder than those without - you're just luckier.

The present health care system is a national embarrassment, the ACA covers more people, but throws too much money at Insurance companies. If you think cost is the biggest problem with ACA, then single payer becomes the logical choice, other than just letting tens of millions go without healthcare. Employers shouldn't be a part of the health care loop, IMO.

Those who now have coverage don't seem to want a system that is universal, why is that?

The explanation is simple. The ACA was the best compromise that Congress could agree on, not the best system that could be. The task now is to try to correct the problems, not shut down the government in a fit of peek. That is a solution that only a masochist would choose.

Nucanuck and others who say Canada has such a great system never mention what Canada's Supreme Court said about their countries healthcare system.

"Delays in the public system are widespread and have serious, sometimes grave, consequences. Dr. Daniel Doyle, a cardiovascular surgeon who teaches and practises in Quebec City, testified that a person with coronary disease is 'sitting on a bomb' and can die at any moment. He confirmed, without challenge, that patients die while on waiting lists."

"In a study of 200 subjects aged 65 and older with hip fractures, the relationship between pre-operative delay and risk of death was examined. The study concluded that the risk of death within six months after surgery increased significantly, by 5 per cent, with the length of pre-operative delay."

"In addition to threatening the life and the physical security of the person, waiting for critical care may have significant adverse psychological effects. A 2001 study concluded that roughly 18 per cent of people who visited specialists for a new illness reported that waiting for care adversely affected their lives. The majority suffered worry, anxiety or stress. This adverse psychological impact can have a serious and profound effect on a person's psychological integrity, and is a violation of security of the person."

"We conclude, based on the evidence, that prohibiting health insurance that would permit ordinary Canadians to access health care, in circumstances where the government is failing to deliver health care in a reasonable manner, thereby increasing the risk of complications and death, interferes with life and security of the person as protected by section seven of the Charter."

PT, I really don't wish ill of anyone, but it looks as if the only thing that will wake up some people to the harsh reality of what others are experiencing is for them to experience it themselves. I think it's incredible how so many of you can have a complete lack of empathy and think that everything you have or have accomplished has been through your own personal efforts. You don't acknowledge or even realize the extent to which government policies and programs have helped you all along the way. They have just been so ingrained in our day-to-day lives for so long that you don't think about them. There is not one thing you do, from the moment you arise from bed in the morning to the moment you lie down at night, that government has not had a hand in - the clean water you drink and make your coffee with, the clean air you breathe, getting the weather forecast, logging on to your computer (government funded research made the internet possible), buying your first house, driving to work on the Interstate, many of the safety features on your car, paid sick days and vacations, a 40-hour work week, public schools for those who couldn't afford private ones (and while our educations system is in bad shape now, you have benefited from it majorly somewhere along the way), tax breaks and loopholes that allow the rich to increase their wealth exponentially....I could go on and on and on. Not only do you not acknowledge the positive aspects of government and how it has worked for you personally, but you want to keep it from working for those at the bottom. That's when you call it socialism. When it works for you, however, it's because you think you deserve it, or else you don't even acknowledge it.

As for you working hard, I don't doubt that. I have too. But there are many who are suffering now who have worked just as hard as you or anybody else who is cozy in their bubble of financial security. Many, if not most, of the people without health insurance or decent jobs did not just become lazy or make bad decisions. The recession that hit in '08 hit a lot of people really hard and it's not because of laziness or lack of ambition that so many of them do not have decent jobs now. Many of those decent jobs just disappeared and are not coming back, and those hardest hit have had to settle for part-time work or underpaid jobs in the service sector with no benefits. Granted, there really are some moochers and takers with little or no ambition, but most Americans want more than just a mere subsistence of food stamps and welfare. I'm sure you have worked hard, but for you to claim, as most of you arrogant wing-nuts do, that those at the bottom are just moochers and takers and have not worked hard, too, is just you and your "blather."

Since he was able to get this law passed with only Democrat votes why didn’t he go for single payer. Surely the liberal party that has claimed they wanted single payer for 80 + years would have voted for it. They didn’t need Republican support so what happened? Why did the liberal cowards back down? It couldn’t have been that they could see where Medicaid and Medicare are headed and they envision their ultimate political demise. Cowards all !!

How can you or any one among us think that our own wellbeing is not affected by the general conditions throughout the land? How can you even begin to argue that the current health and education needs of the US are being met?

The US is in a long-term decline and we all know it. There is no better place to begin to reverse the decline than improving the two things that would give all Americans a window of hope...a chance at the American dream.

Rickaroo said "You don't acknowledge or even realize the extent to which government policies and programs have helped you all along the way."

Yeah like the CAFE Standards our government imposed on vehicles, making them lighter and increasing fatalities and serious injuries. According to the Brookings Institution, a 500-lb weight reduction of the average car increased annual highway fatalities by 2,200-3,900 and serious injuries by 11,000 and 19,500 per year

USA Today found that 7,700 deaths occurred for every mile per gallon gained in fuel economy standards. Smaller cars accounted for up to 12,144 deaths in 1997, 37% of all vehicle fatalities for that year."

"How many deaths have resulted? Depending on which study you choose, the total ranges from 41,600 to 124,800. To that figure we can add between 352,000 and 624,000 people suffering serious injuries, including being crippled for life. In the past thirty years, fuel standards have become one of the major causes of death and misery in the United States — and one almost completely attributable to human stupidity and shortsightedness."

Let's not forget in 1970 the EPA was just starting and to justify its existence they banned DDT. They banned DDT without having any evidence that it caused cancer in children. DDT was used to fight malaria and since being banned by our government millions of children through out the world have died from malaria.

Our public education system is falling apart as we fall farter behind other countries in reading science and math and the answer from liberals is to throw more money at the problem.

All of our entitlement programs that have kept generation after generation dependent on the government.

Our government has do a great job with all the fraud and abuse in Medicaid and medicare those two programs alone are costing us billions of dollars every year and now you think our government is capable of operating our healthcare efficiently.

I can mange my own life much better then the government can.

It is plain for all to see that the GOP has been taken over by the Tea Party. Name a left-wing organization that has managed to influence the Democratic Party in the way the teabaggers have taken hold of Republicans. Most Democrats in office are even afraid to appear too liberal or to acknowledge their more progressive base, but the Republicans bend over backward to appease their teabaggers and the fundamentalist kooks. Thomas Sowell had the prefect response for this. "If your house was on fire would you call the arsonist who stated the fire to put it out?" Yet we do that all the time with our government.

What experience do these politicians have when it come to making policy for our economy. Chris Dodd and Barney Frank never worked in the financial industry let alone the private sector and they write the most intrusive and biggest financial legislation in the history of this country! That effects of that are already being felt by the banks and being passed down to the you and I the consumer.

The government just needs to get the hell out of the way and stop telling us what kind of light bulb we can burn, what type of toilet we can have in my house, what type of appliance you have to buy in order to get a rebate, telling us we have to wear a seat belt but each state can decide if motorcyclist has to wear a helmet, where you can and can not smoke cigarettes, which are a legalized product.

They need to stop all subsidies to all big corporations including oil and green energy companies and stop picking winners and losers, which includes on business regulations. These regulations strangle small businesses and are not able to pass the cost onto the customer like large corporations can.

ObamaCare will kill our economy and when it does the liberals and the media will blame George Bush and the low information voter will believe it.

As far as the economy goes Labor-force participation has hit a 35-year low. Median household income is lower than it was five years ago. Only the top 5% of households have seen their incomes rise under President Obama. Commuters are paying more than twice as much for gas as they were in 2008. Federal payouts for food stamps, unemployment insurance and disability insurance have reached unprecedented levels.

The US has fewer people working than six years ago. Income is actually down in spite of massive stimulus spending. The Fed is buying almost 90% our own bonds to artificially hold down rates. The newly created money is inflating stocks, bonds, and real state...again. There is no real recovery. The OECD countries, including the US, are all in the early stages of a massive depression. That's the bad news. The good news is that the excesses of the past will be cleared by the depression.

rick is exactly right about the stock market. bernanke won't turn off the faucets because the economy is still recovering. gas prices was under 1.90 when the president took office. it's been over 3 dollars almost his entire time in office. the gap between the wealthy and the poor has grown even wider. more folks on food stamps, people staying on unemployment benefits longer. the only reason the unemployment rate has declined is because the civilian labor force is shrinking because people quit looking for work. this president has added almost as much debt as every president before him. yeah its working.

The next president is going to have a field day blaming Obama for the mess he or she inherited.

What planet are you on? The Dow Jones has been breaking records, new home construction is showing life and unemployment has been steadily declining ever since President Obama took office.

The following facts are not Obama's fault or to his credit:

The stock market is up due to an infusion from the federal reserve printing and processing through Wall Street $85 billion per month. A hint they may taper off knocked it down for several days.

Unemployment report of the percent unemployed improves due to depletion of benefits and dropping out of the job market. When a part time worker takes a second job that counts as two jobs and a reduced unemployed number. The household survey numbers still reflect a 9% level. Only 63% of the eligible are working which is the lowest in over 50 years.

New housing starts are still anemic and back down recently plus it is a regional problem.

It is good that your income is up, guessing you must be government employee which includes school teachers, however the average income across America is down without considering inflation. Include inflation and the average income is much lower.

For these reasons the federal reserve continued their monthly QE and suggested they may reduce the target unemployment number to off set the distortions in the report and considering the hh survey results plus the percent of eligible that are employed.

You have not yet missed the death or funeral. The life saving techniques have not yet been offered by either party but are badly needed. The president is neither the culprit or hero in economy matters but congress is the root cause.

tifosi, And the gas price was $1.65 Dec 25 of 2008. The rise that year was artificially inflated to help certain people get elected. November 3 2008 $1.72. I see you quoted the price at it highest but failed to add how fast it dropped around the election. It hasn't been that low since Obama was sworn in. Just this year it got up to $3.89. In January 2008 Obama said on national TV energy prices would necessarily skyrocket. He also said the People would have excepted the high gas prices if it had gone up gradually. He was true to his word, energy prices have gone up over his 5 years. At least mine has. Winter heating bill $300 more now than in 2008, electricity doubled gas for the car way up except for that hiccup in the first half of 2008. So if you are going to make remarks get all the facts.

volsam,

Just a quick catch up so you will understand that the present economic quagmire is a fully American creation shared by all parties. Johnson and Nixon overspent during the Vietnam War and the US (and the world) was forced off of the gold standard in 1971. With our money creation, inflation exploded until Paul Volker became Fed Chairman and slammed the economy down with high interest rates. The Reagan years saw taxes cut and spending increase. The government debt/stimulus made a lot of people rich, but the middle class saw no gains. Clinton increased taxes and cut spending, but he also oversaw a wholesale elimination of financial regulation which turned out to be a massive mistake for runaway leverage in all OECD countries. Bush cut taxes then increased spending massively to fight two unfunded wars. Obama took office at the beginning of a great depression that is just getting underway. There was no right course. There still isn't. We are going into an economic dark zone and the only question is when does it get really bad. The debts can't and won't be repaid unless you consider massive money printing a form of repayment.

Obama is being carried along by the currents, currents that he/we can't control. Stopping the debt increases will cause the full collapse to come sooner, and that may be the better course. Continuing the spending increases keeps the illusion and false hope of a recovery going a while longer, but the result is still economic collapse.

Obama is neither our savior nor the main cause of our economic problems. It took more than forty years of mistakes by both parties to get here. It will probably take ten to twenty years to work through the damage we have done.

We need a strong wise leader to get us through this...I don't care which party supplies that leader because the solutions will not be partisan solutions.

It just doesn’t get any funnier than that ... Really!

No liberal I know and no Democrat in the White House is calling for some utopian socialist state. I don't know of any liberals who are totally opposed to capitalism or the free market.

Maybe that is because “Most Democrats in office are even afraid to appear too liberal or to acknowledge their more progressive base” - (Rickeroo). They campaign to the “center” and serve to the “left” but if they were more up-front with the voters as to their real beliefs you would hear their true hostility to capitalism or the free market.

We just believe that there must be a balance between the free market and sensible government regulation. Neither can stand alone.

”Sensible” ... Yeah Really!

Name a left-wing organization that has managed to influence the Democratic Party in the way the teabaggers have taken hold of Republicans.

How about the CPC Congressional Progressive Caucus that was founded by Bernie Sanders who is a socialist member of the Senate and by the DSA Democratic Socialist of America which is a subgroup of Socialist International. Until 2009 the members of that caucus were listed by the DSA as members of that socialist group. The CPC did establish their separate identity from the DSA in about 2003 strictly for PR purposes and not policy differences.

but the Republicans bend over backward to appease their teabaggers and the fundamentalist kooks.

They undoubtedly think they can be honest with the American people, unlike the Fleabaggers, about what they stand for.

It's not that the left has gone farther left....it's that the right wing has gone so far to the right, even moderation seems like liberal extremism to you now.

President Kennedy's policy positions would make him a Conservative Republican in today’s political world.

The Columbine high school shooters were too young to vote, but both of their families were progressive liberals and registered Democrats.

And one more thing,

not a single one of these killers were members of the National Rifle Association.

Lets get this right. Obama was raised by communist parents. He is good friends with the left wing extremist terrorist Bill Ayers and he attended the left wing extremist church of Jeremiah Wright. How in the world can o"bastard call anyone an extremist?

For those of us who have been holding on to our cash waiting for the markets to fall we might have been given a gift by obama letting the government shut down. Obama just keeps letting the wealthy get wealthier.

joneses, The truly, truly sad part is the uninformed voters reelected this extreme progressive community organizer twice. That says a lot about where we stand as a country. The entitlement culture may be ingrained so deeply in society that there may be no turning back.It happens to all civilizations whose leaders are more interested in power than the peasants they represent. In Washington the choices are big government or bigger government.

Almost all the elected officials are so Liberal it makes sick at my stomach and sad at the same time.Do you really think this is what the Founders intended. They were mostly conservative way further to the right than every Barry Goldwater in the 50' and 60's.

I think I posted this last night but just in case I'll post it again. The conservative message is strong family values, a strong military, help the truly needy, small effective government, clean water, being stewards of the environment and limited but effective regulation. Why would anybody not support this platform. It would be a lot cheaper and manageable than this bloated unaccountable tax and spend and borrow ideology.

Who would be blamed for a shutdown?

Generally speaking, no one comes out looking good if the government shuts down. A Pew Research poll conducted Sept. 19-22 shows 39 percent of Americans would blame Republicans if a shutdown were to occur, compared with 36 percent who would fault the Obama administration and 17 percent who would hold both sides responsible. According to a Pew poll from a comparable period during the 2011 budget battle, the public spread the blame around nearly identically.

Tif, you need to check the polls again. The latest poll I could find, which asked the question about being conservative, not Republican, has the country center right by 54 percent conservative to 38 percent liberal. If there is a more recent poll that suggests other wise please send the poll and I'll check it out,it is a very interesting subject.

Bob Woodward: "[Obama] said he will not negotiate on the debt ceiling. A reasonable position. 'I will not be blackmailed,' he said. But he should be talking. They should be meeting, discussing this, because as I think Steve Ratner showed earlier, the American economy is at stake and the president, if there is a downturn or a collapse or whatever could happen here, that’s bad, it’s going to be on his head. The history books are going to say, we had an economic calamity in the Presidency of Barack Obama. Speaker Boehner, indeed, is playing a role on this. Go back to the Great Depression in the 1930s. I’ll bet no one can name who was the Speaker of the House at the time. Henry Thomas Rainey. He’s not in the history book; it’s on the president’s head. He’s got to lead. He’s got to talk. And the absence of discussion here, I think, is baffling element."

Jt,

It sounds like you have your coverage and what happens to the rest is beyond your perimeter if caring. Consider the possibility that nations can be sick as well as individuals. If the US can't find a way to offer basic health care and education to all, indeed that could be considered a national sickness...an unhealthy society.

Man you had me standing with my hand over my heart (as if I had one ... right?) and tears running down my face until you wrote the following.

BTW, I consider myself a conservative.

You’re comic stylings are good but of course not up to Rickaroo’s standards.

Mayor Rogero has served Knoxville as a community development director, county commissioner, non-profit executive, urban and regional planner, community volunteer, and neighborhood champion.

What would you expect from the citizens of an area that would elect a community organizer? Maybe they will be the Chicago of Tennessee once she gets the murder rate up as the area economy is just about right the way it is.
