The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis team broke an eight-match losing streak to UNC Greensboro by beating the Spartans 5-2 on Saturday on the UTC courts. That made the Mocs 15-3 overall and 6-1 in second place in the Southern Conference. The team will honor its lone senior, Alexa Flynn, before today's noon match against Elon. She, doubles partner Kaylene Chadwell and Kelsey Coots each won in both doubles and singles against UNCG (7-10, 4-2). The Mocs' last previous over UNCG was on March 26, 2006. "It was a good SoCon win. Greensboro is always tough," UTC coach Jeff Clark said in a school release. "We got off to a really good start in the doubles. That was really important today."
• UTC athletic director David Blackburn will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's last 2013-14 noon luncheon meeting Monday at Finley Stadium, and the public is invited. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without.
Softball
• Second-ranked Tennessee lost 7-4 on Friday and 8-4 on Saturday in Southeastern Conference softball at LSU, and previously undefeated senior pitcher Ellen Renfroe suffered both pitching losses. Taylor Koenig and East Hamilton graduate Shaliyah Geathers each was 2-for-4 Saturday for the Lady Vols (31-5, 8-3), Koenig with two RBIs. Former Chattanooga State star Ashley Czechner got the pitching win Friday and a save Saturday for LSU (22-15, 4-7).
• Nationally sixth-ranked Chattanooga State won 4-3 and 8-0 over visiting Motlow College in TCCAA softball Saturday. Emily Dagnan was 2-for-3 with a two-run home run and Lindsey Stickrod also was 2-for-3 in the first game for the Lady Tigers (37-5, 22-4), and Shelby Willard's pitching record rose to 16-0. In the second game, Izzy McCurry was 3-for-3 with two homers and three RBIs, Baylee Williams was 2-for-3 with a homer, winning pitcher Sharlene Godoy also homered and Khadija Neely hit a two-run triple.
• Ida Watson pitched an eight-inning five-hitter in the first game, and Cleveland State beat visiting Volunteer State 1-0 and 8-7 in TCCAA softball Saturday. Emily Huston's double finally ended the first game, and Perry Hindi's two-run double in the bottom of the seventh gave the Lady Cougars (15-23, 10-16) a come-from-behind win for the sweep. Hindi had three RBIs, Jennifer Kern a two-run single and Huston a homer in the second game.
• Lee University and Delta State moved up the start of their Gulf South Conference softball series in Cleveland, Miss., to Friday night. Lee won that game 5-3 but lost 6-3 and 6-5 in Saturday's doubleheader. Lexie Dean was 3-for-3 and Laurel Allen, Amanda Lynn and Ana Coscorrosa each had two hits Friday in support of winning pitcher Angie Hughes for the Lady Flames (18-21, 8-13). Jesse Giles was 2-for-3 with a run scored in each game Saturday, including a homer and two RBIs in the finale. Lynn was 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the first loss and Coscorrosa homered, singled and drove in two runs in the second.
• Jordan Brett was 6-for-8 with two homers and four RBIs as Covenant College lost 9-8 in eight innings and won 15-6 in five against Mary Baldwin in USA South softball Saturday. Morgan Lane also homered in the first game and totaled three RBIs for Covenant.
• The Bryan College softball team swept an Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader from Columbia (S.C.) College on Saturday, 12-4 and 3-1. Heather Daniel was 3-for-3 with a homer and Kaitie Sims pitched a five-hitter with nine strikeouts in the 3-1 win for the Lady Lions (21-18, 10-4). In the other game, Taylor Yates was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, Katie Vaughn was 2-for-3 with a homer and matched Katelyn Bowen with three RBIs, and Heidi Daniel, Becca Zimmerman and Olivia Gore each had two hits and scored a run; Mariam Wood was 1-for-2 with two runs and an RBI.
• Ooltewah's Jessica Morgan was 2-for-3 in each game as Carson-Newman won 3-1 and lost 3-0 against Wingate (29-13, 11-3) in a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader Saturday in Jefferson City, Tenn. Ooltewah's Sara Kelley batted in a run and Ridgeland alumna Caitlyn Lance was 1-for-1 and scored the go-ahead run behind former Chattanooga State pitcher Cassie Lyons in the win for the Lady Eagles (28-12, 7-7). Hayley Burnette from Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe was 2-for-2 in game two.
Auto Racing
• Jimmy Elliott of Cleveland passed hometown driver Ryan King at the end to win the 40-lap NeSmith Late Model Touring Series race, the Ole Smoky Moonshine 40, Friday night at 411 Motor Speedway at Seymour, Tenn. Pole-sitter Cory Hedgecock from Loudon was third. The series ran a 50-lapper there Saturday night.
Lacrosse
• Michael Morris scored six goals as Sewanee beat visiting Berry 15-7 in Southern Athletic Association men's lacrosse Saturday. Cotter Brown, Davis Brown and Baylor Koch each added two goals, Cotter with three assists, and Tommy Healy made 15 saves for the Tigers (8-3, 5-0). The Sewanee women (8-6, 5-1) beat Millsaps 16-5 with a 13-3 first half. Mallory Grimm had three goals and Katie Riddle, Sally Anne Greenwood, Emily Hylton, Payton Fields and Ella Richardson netted two apiece.
