Led by Jordan Britt in a tie for second at 7-under-par 137 (67-70) and Emily McLennan sharing fourth at 139 (68-71), the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's golf team is in third place at 577, two shots behind East Carolina and nine behind Florida State, in the Web.com Intercollegiate tournament at Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. Isabella Loza and Agathe Sauzon are at 150 and 151 for the Mocs, whose opening 282 is the second best round in program history. The UTC men's team began with a ninth-place 295 in the 15-team Old Waverly Collegiate in West Point, Miss., but round two was suspended in progress. UTC's Davis Bunn's 69 tied for the second best first round, when Wes Gosselin, Ewan Scott and Chris Robb shot 73, 76 and 77.
• The Lee University men's golf team is in second place, 12 strokes behind North Greenville (S.C.), going into the final round of the 10-team Tennessee River Rumble Intercollegiate tournament at the Tennessee National Golf Course near Loudon. Lee's 298 came from four players shooting 1-over-par 73s: Hunter Vest, Matt Emery, Taylor Davis and Adam Wright.
• Sewanee junior Jenna King and sophomore Alison Eleey tied for ninth with 78s in the rain-shortened Callaway Collegiate Invitational golf tournament this past weekend at Pine Mountain, Ga., and Tigers sophomore Emily Javadi from Chattanooga tied for 13th with an 80. Oglethorpe's Elizabeth Kim won with a 70.
• Tennessee Wesleyan's Josh Wheeler and Logan Cass were the Appalachian Athletic Conference golfers of the week for the last week of March. Wheeler, a senior from Maryille, led the Bulldogs to first place out of 10 teams with his first-place 147 in the 36-hole Trevecca Spring Invitational tournament. Cass, a freshman from Cookeville, finished second out of 42 women in the TWC Spring Invitational.
• Walker Valley High School graduate Cortnee Young was one of three King University players to make the Conference Carolinas academic all-conference women's golf team. Young is a junior business major with a cumulative grade point average of 3.37 on a 4.0 scale.
Softball/Baseball
• Bryan College sophomore Kaitie Sims from Baylor School was named Monday the AAC softball pitcher of the week. Sims, a transfer from Carson-Newman, struck out 25 batters in four games last week, and in her last three appearances of the week she allowed one run in 15 innings and earned two wins. Bryan's scheduled doubleheader Monday at the University of the Cumberlands was rained out.
• Tennessee Wesleyan junior center fielder Shell McCain from Fort Mill, S.C., was the AAC baseball player of the week for his part in the Bulldogs' 5-0 week with a 56-5 scoring margin. He went 10-for-14 with three home runs, three doubles, four walks, 10 runs batted in, 10 runs scored and five stolen bases in six tries. McCain was 3-for-4 with two homers, a double, three RBIs and three runs in a 12-1 defeat of Hiwassee.
• Covenant College had the USA South's baseball pitcher of the week, Garrett Kriston, and the softball rookie of the week, freshman third baseman Jordan Brett. Kriston earned his second such honor this season with a nine-strikeout four-hitter in a 3-1 defeat of Ferrum. He retired the last 13 batters he faced and now is 5-1 with a 2.12 earned run average for the season. Brett was 13-for-19 with three home runs, nine runs and eight RBIs in games against nationally ranked Piedmont, league second-place Averett and Mary Baldwin. She's batting .407 with four homers and 33 RBIs.
Auto Racing
• Jamie Perry of Ringgold and Rick Hixson of Soddy-Daisy won the Late Model races Saturday night at Boyd's Speedway with John Ownbey finishing second to Perry in the Steel-head event and Jerry Coffman the runner-up to Hixson in the Crate feature. Gordon Lee High School senior Jake Caldwell in A-Hobby earned his first victory, Dallas Brooks of Chattanooga won in B-Hobby and Coty Campbell of Birchwood prevailed in the Mini class.
Lacrosse
• Sewanee's Michael Morris is the Southern Athletic Association men's lacrosse offensive player of the week for the third week in a row and the fourth time this season, and Tigers goalie Tommy Healy is the latest defensive honoree. While Morris was recording six goals and an assist in Saturday's win over Berry, Healy was making 15 saves while allowing only seven goals -- the Vikings' lowest total of the season.
