Dalton police warn against contest scam

If random callers tell you that you won a contest but first need to give them money, Dalton police say, don’t trust the caller.

According to a news release, residents have reported to police a practice in which callers say they are from Publisher’s Clearinghouse. They will tell you that you won a large cash prize, which will be delivered to your house by a man driving a Brink’s truck with a police escort.

But first, according to police, the caller will say you need to load $850 on a Wal-Mart gift card. Then, a Publisher’s Clearinghouse “representative” will pick up the gift card, and all that money in the Brink’s truck will come to your doorstep.

According to Dalton police, the scammer calls from a New York area code. Anyone who receives a call like this should contact Detective John Helton at 706-278-9085, ext. 143.
