Golf Mocs fifth in Old Waverly tournament

Paced by a third-round 69 from Chris Robb, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's golf team moved up four places Tuesday and finished fifth at 867 in the 15-team Old Waverly Collegiate tournament at West Point, Miss. -- one shot behind Florida and eight behind winner Mississippi State. Mocs senior Davis Bunn, who had a 69 Monday, tied for ninth individually at 215, and Robb and Wes Gosselin tied for 17th at 217 and 26th at 219; Liam Johnston shared 41st place at 222.

• The UTC women's golfers wound up ninth out of 19 schools -- but only three shots out of fourth -- in the Web.com Intercollegiate at Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. The female Mocs' Jordan Britt was fourth individually with a career-best 4-under-par 212, and Emily McLennan tied for eighth at 216. The team closed with a 308 for an 885 total that was one back of three teams. Florida State won by 24 strokes with an 851.

• Bernadette Little and Cori Burns tied for third with 75s and Madison Alexander and Courtney Shelton shot 76s as Lee University won the one-day Agnes McAmis Memorial women's golf tournament Tuesday at Link Hills Country Club in Greeneville, Tenn. Their 303 beat Carson-Newman by a stroke.

• The Lee men's golf team finished third at 591 in the Tennessee River Rumble Intercollegiate tournament Tuesday at Tennessee National near Loudon. North Greenville (S.C.) won at 587, and Walters State was second at 590. Lee's Taylor Davis tied for second individually at 145, and teammates Matt Emery and Adam Wright joined him on the all-tourney team by sharing fourth at 147. Hunter Vest shot 149.

• Dalton High School graduate Chase Miller beat Coastal Georgia teammate Allen Bradford in a playoff for medalist honors after they shot 139s in leading the Mariners to the championship of the 13-team "Bash at the Beach" this past weekend at Daytona Beach, Fla. Dalton State was ninth at 592 with Tobias Ebner and Tyler Mitchell tying for 15th at 145.

• Centre College junior Alyssa Brown from Baylor School tied for second place with a 77 in the Centre Spring Invitational women's golf tournament last Saturday at the Danville (Ky.) Country Club. Centre won the six-team event.

Baseball

• Stephen Gaylor and Doug Heath had three hits apiece and three and two RBIs as Berry College (22-10) beat Covenant College 12-8 in NCAA Division III baseball Tuesday at Rome, Ga. The teams combined for 33 hits. Covenant (21-8) had 15, including two each by Scott Gillespie, David Lockwood, K.C. Simons and Forrest Hunter, and Luke Harvey and Perry Rigby each batted in two runs.

• Blake Ray was 2-for-4 and Derrick Pitts was 1-for-3 with the RBI for Lee University as the Flames (23-16) lost 3-1 to Tusculum (25-14) in NCAA Division II baseball Tuesday. Lee starting pitcher C.J. Lusted allowed six hits and the three runs; Jeremy Bales gave up one hit in 3 1/3 innings.

• Lindsey Wilson edged visiting Bryan 7-5 in a college baseball game that weathered a lightning delay Tuesday night in Columbia, Ky. For Bryan (24-18), Tyler Latham was 3-for-5 and Crandon Wallace was 2-for-3, each scoring a run, and Calvin McMiller and Preston King each was 2-for-5.

Auto Racing

• Curfew ended the Super Pro class before the eliminations did Saturday night at the Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip, leaving four big-block Chevrolet dragsters still in contention out of the field of 60. The four drivers divided the winnings equally. All four had runs of under five seconds, led by Cynthia Warnock with a 4.52-second run at 149.25 mph in a dragster prepared by Ronnie Warnock. The others were Eric Boyd, Matt Grayson and Justin Tipton. Jeffrey Montgomery won the Foot Brake class with L.C. Bigham second, and Abby Fisk was the Junior Dragster victor with Jake Clayton second.

Softball

• Madison Shipman hit two of Tennessee's four home runs and drove in four runs, Annie Aldrete went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and Shaliyah Geathers from East Hamilton tripled in a run and scored as the fourth-ranked softball Lady Vols (33-5) beat Tennessee Tech 13-5 in five innings Tuesday night in Knoxville. Kendall Hooper was 2-for-3 with two homers and four RBIs for Tech (12-31).

• Despite a 4-for-7 doubleheader for Jordan Brett, the Covenant College softball team lost 9-2 and 9-1 at Emory on Tuesday. Emory (33-6) is ranked 18th in NCAA Division III. Brett was 3-for-4 for the Lady Scots (11-27) in the first game, when Kendall Whan and Cori Hilt had RBIs. Madison Quirk was 1-for-2 with an RBI double in game two.

• Cumberland University needed a three-run ninth inning to beat Tennessee Temple 6-5 in the first game of their softball doubleheader Tuesday in Lebanon, Tenn., but the Bulldogs scored nine in the first inning of game two and won 16-0 in five innings.
