Henderson, Britt get SoCon honors and other sports news

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga distance runner Teghan Henderson and golfer Jordan Britt were honored by the Southern Conference this week. Henderson, a redshirt freshman from Pickering, Ontario, was honored with two awards -- track athlete of the week and student-athlete of the week. Henderson set a school record for 5,000 meters in a winning performace at the Stanford Invitational, finishing with a time of 16:13:03, which was 18 seconds faster than the second-place finisher. The business management major with a 3.87 GPA also earned her second student-athlete award of this school year. Britt, a senior and former Signal Mountain prep star, finished fourth at the Web.com Intercollegiate on Tuesday with a 4-under-par 212. It was her fifth top-five finish of the season, and she shot a career-best 67 in Monday's opening round.

Baseball

• Cleveland State's baseball team split a doubleheader with the Tusculum junior varsity losing 6-2 before winning 8-4 on Wednesday in Greeneville, Tenn. Cougars starter Jordan Whitmire struggled and only managed to get five outs while allowing five runs on seven hits and two walks, and the offense strugggled against five Tusculum pitchers. Cameron Strickland went 2-for-3 and Zach Janes had two hits and scored a run. In the second game, Cleveland State scored their runs in bunches with four-run innings in the second and sixth innings. Shortstop Janson Roberson led the Cougars on offense, going 2-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs. Chris Caffrey and Evan Speicher each had two hits, and Janes and Wright Hackett each scored twice. Gabe Rich picked up his second win of the season with a perfect inning of relief work the fifth inning. Starter Raunel Perez allowed three runs on three hits over three innings and left the game with the Cougars leading, but he didn't pitch long enough to qualify for the victory.

• Lindsey Wilson edged visiting Bryan 7-5 in a college baseball game that weathered a lightning delay Tuesday night in Columbia, Ky. For Bryan (24-18), Tyler Latham was 3-for-5 and Crandon Wallace was 2-for-3, each scoring a run, and Calvin McMiller and Preston King each was 2-for-5. Tennessee Wesleyan won 15-4 in seven innings at Lindsey Wilson on Wednesday. Matt Malloy was 4-for-5 at the plate with three RBIS, and Logan Dalton had three hits, three RBIs and scored three runs in the win. Brad Carpenter was 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and three runs scored. First baseman K.J. Hockaday also homered and hat two hits and two RBI.

Softball

• Despite a 4-for-7 doubleheader for Jordan Brett, the Covenant College softball team lost 9-2 and 9-1 at Emory on Tuesday. Emory (33-6) is ranked 18th in NCAA Division III. Brett was 3-for-4 for the Lady Scots (11-27) in the first game, when Kendall Whan and Cori Hilt had RBIs. Madison Quirk was 1-for-2 with an RBI double in game two. Brett and Morgan Lane were named to USA South second team all-conference Wednesday.

• Cumberland University needed a three-run ninth inning to beat Tennessee Temple 6-5 in the first game of their softball doubleheader Tuesday in Lebanon, Tenn., but the Bulldogs scored nine in the first inning of game two and won 16-0 in five innings.

• Piedmont College freshman Allison Vaughn from Heritage High School went 5-for-7 with five RBIs in an 8-2, 6-1 doubleheader sweep of Greensboro College last Sunday. She was 4-for-4 with two doubles, three RBIs and three runs in the first game. The Lady Lions finished 23-1 in the USA South this season and were 35-3 overall going into Wednesday's matchup at Emory of nationally ranked NCAA Division III teams. On Wednesday, Vaugn was named first team all conference. Vaughn went 2-for-5 Wednesday as Piedmont was swept in a doubleheader with Emory. Prior to Wednesday, Vaughn had a .462 batting average and was tied for the team lead with 36 runs. Another Heritage alumna, Amber Burton, was 3-for-5 with two doubles, four RBIs and two doubles as Northwest Florida State won 10-2 and 6-5 against Gulf Coast State last weekend.
