Back-to-back exhibitions at UTC's Cress Gallery showcase the talents of senior Bachelor of Fine Arts students.
The "UTC Department of Art 2014 Senior Thesis BFA Exhibitions," presented in two 10-day shows, are the capstone events for the creative research completed this year by students enrolled in the professional curriculum of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Department of Art.
The featured students are matriculating from the department's curricular concentration areas of graphic design, painting and drawing, photography and media arts, and sculpture. Their challenge was to advance a position or proposition in visual form with a body of work that is thought-provoking, timely and conceived in a wide range of material and form.
"Show One" continues through Friday, April 11, at the gallery. It features works by students Danielle Anderson, Kelsi Bruce, Alex Chen, Bethany Congdon, Ashley Hamilton, Eric Higgins, Travis Hitchcock, Taylor Kinser, Kara Kollars, Molly Schimpf and Adam Tetzlaff.
"Show Two" opens Tuesday, April 15, with artist talks at 5 p.m. in the auditorium of Cadek Hall, 725 Oak St. A public reception follows from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the UTC Fine Arts Center lobby, 752 Vine St.
The exhibition will be on view in the gallery from Wednesday, April 16, through Friday, April 25. It features students Keren Beddoe, Claire Bloomfield, Brandis Bovel, Jan Burleson, Chris Hamby, Dolores Hoffman, Adam Kirby, Chase Long, Chris Lykins, Laura Little, Erick Montesinos, Dannie Myers and Maggie Paden.
Each of these students has studied a minimum of four years. Their first two years provided grounding in skills and experience with materials, tools and process. The final two years followed a mentored personal course, emphasizing art history and formal and critical theory.
