Cougars split two at Walters State

Cleveland State managed to beat nationally ranked Walters State 6-4 before losing 5-4 in their TCCAA baseball doubleheader Saturday at Morristown, Tenn.

Keith Buckhault went 3-for-3 with an RBI, Zack Janes was 2-for-3 with three runs and Dalton Rogers and Evan Speicher each doubled and drove in two runs in the Cougars' win over Walters (36-11, 19-5). Rogers and Wright Hackett had two hits apiece.

Former Soddy-Daisy star James Fowlkes was 0-1 with two walks and two runs in the Senators' loss and had an RBI in the win, when Hackett and Chris Caffrey had RBIs for Cleveland State (23-19).

Chattanooga State opened its weekend series against Dyersburg State with a 6-0 win Friday.

North Alabama 15-1, Lee 1-7: At Cleveland, the host Flames (24-17, 11-12) bounced back well in the second game of the Gulf South doubleheader as Zacary Hawkins was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Siosi Poti and Blake Ray each had two hits and scored twice behind Jeremy Stawychny's six-hit pitching. Ray doubled twice.

Josh Carpenter was 5-for-8 with three runs and two RBIs in the two games for UNA (21-21, 11-15). Kyle Conkle batted in three runs and scored two and Bradley Noland scored three and drove in two in game one, while Brantley Claunch pitched a six-hitter.

Montreat 5-1, Bryan 3-4: At Dayton, the host Lions' Cody Rhinehart was 2-for-4 and scored two runs in Saturday's first game, when Kendall Hooks was 2-for-2 with two RBIs for Montreat (17-24, 7-13). In the win for Bryan (26-19, 12-9), Grant Zawadzki and Kelvin McMiller each was 2-for-4, Zawadzki with an RBI, and Preston King had two RBIs. Tristan Speak and closer Kenny Knudsen combined to pitch a six-hitter.

Methodist 13, Covenant 5: At Wilson, N.C., Steven Kirby homered and drove in four runs and Tyler Hardee and Stephen Nalls each had three hits and combined for five runs and three RBIs as Methodist (19-12, 13-8) won the rubber game of the USA South series. Scott Gillespie was 3-for-5 and Paul Phillips was 2-for-3 with two RBIs for the Scots (21-10, 15-6), while Chris Rollins was 2-for-3 with one RBI and Alex Kerr was 1-for-2 with two RBIs.

Millsaps 9-7, Sewanee 1-2: At Jackson, Miss., Nate Barnett was 4-for-5, Jackson Cooper was 3-for-5 and Zack Sutton was 2-for-4 with the RBI in the first game for Sewanee (9-21, 1-16) in the Southern Athletic Association doubleheader. Jack Whaley was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Cooper was 2-for-4 with a run in the second defeat.
