University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's golfer Emily McLennan holds the individual lead, but the Mocs are tied for second after the opening day of the Southern Conference Championship at Moss Creek Golf Club in Hilton Head, S.C. McLennan shot a 73 to lead Samford's Natalie Mitchell by one stroke. In team play, UTC is at 312 for the tournament, tied with Samford and seven shots behind Furman. In addition to McLennan, Agathe Sauzon is tied for 11th after shooting 79, and Jordan Britt and Isabella Loza each shot 80 to tie for 14th.

Soccer

• Dalton State College announced Saturday that it will begin intercollegiate play in men's and women's soccer in the fall 2015 season. The teams will play home games at the new municipal soccer stadium at Lakeshore Park, and athletic director Derek Waugh hopes to have coaches in place by this fall. "This is very positive news for Dalton State, the athletic department and the community," DSC president Dr. John Schwenn said in a school release. "Our primary mission is to serve the residents of this area with a broad range of opportunities, educational and beyond. With the strength and popularity of soccer in northwest Georgia, this announcement will only further that goal." Said Waugh: "Our community and the surrounding areas have obviously become a hotbed for soccer. I also look forward to bringing in kids from all over the world, like our other teams have been able to do."

Baseball

• Lee University won the rubber game of its weekend GSC baseball series with a 4-3 triumph Sunday against North Alabama in Cleveland, Tenn. Lee scored two runs in the bottom of the first, before falling behind 3-2 after five innngs, but Nathan Wierzagac tied the game with anr RBI single in the sixth inning and Derrick Pitts gave the Flames the lead for good with a run-scoring hit in the seventh. Pitts finished 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs and pitched a perfect ninth for his third save of the season. Jeremy Bales took the win in relief of starter Rob Gustitus.

• Millsaps completed a weekend SAA baseball series sweep of Sewanee with an 11-1 victory Sunday in Jackson, Miss. Sewanee (9-22, 1-17) took a brief lead in the top of the first when Jackson Cooper was hit by a pitch to lead off the game, move to second on a wild pitch, took third on a groundout by Jack Whaley and scored on an RBI groundout by Nate Barnett. Zach Sutton doubled for the Tigers, and Ryan Poole had the team's only other hit.

Softball

• Sara Kelley from Ooltewah was 4-for-7 with a home run, a double, two RBIs and three runs scored as Carson-Newman won 4-1 and lost 7-5 in SAC softball Saturday at Newberry. The homer was the 32nd in the senior's career, putting her within one of the Lady Eagles' record. Kelley has 50 RBIs with nine homers this season for CNU (29-15).

• The Bryan College softball team edged Truett-McConnell 3-2 on Heather Daniel's three-run sixth-inning home run in the first of two AAC games Saturday in Dayton, and the Lady Lions (23-18, 12-4) completed a sweep with a 7-0 victory on pitcher Kaitie Sims' three-hitter with six strikeouts. Daniel and her sister Heidi each had two hits, two runs and an RBI in game two, when Becca Zimmerman batted in two runs and Taylor Yates was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Shanna Chappell and Sarah Hundley each gave up a run in their combined five-hitter in game one.

• Lee University took a 12-4 win over North Alabama in five innings in the finale of their GSC softball series Sunday in Cleveland. Meg Macias led the flames with a 3-for-4 day at the plate with a home run and four RBIs, while Ana Coscorrosa was 2-for-2 with two runs and three RBIs in the win.

• Rhodes College beat visiting Sewanee 16-1 and 18-0 in SAA softball Saturday in Memphis and added 19-0 and 12-1 victories Sunday. Grace Cobbs had the RBI hit Saturday for the Tigers (3-23), and Emily Culbertson knocked in the only run Sunday.

Cycling

Local college cyclists Megan Rogers and T.J. Killelea led King University over the weekend as the Tornado defended its Southern Collegiate Cycling Conference championship in Orlando, Fla. Soddy-Daisy's Rogers had the best weekend of her season, winning the category B criterium on Saturday morning and taking top spot in the time trial later that afternoon. She wrapped up her weekend with a second-place finish in Sunday's omnium race. Red Bank graduate Killelea finished third in the men's category A road race Sunday to help King retain their conference title ofver Milligan and Brevard College. Rogers and Killelea and their teammates will travel to Richmond, Va., to compete in the USA Cycling Collegiate Road Nationals on May 2-4.

Football

• The Chattanooga Locomotion lost 30-16 to the visiting Huntsville Tigers in their Independent Women's Football League season opener Saturday night at Red Bank High School. The Locomotion have a bye this week. Their next home game is May 3.

• The Tennessee Train lost 34-0 to the Atlanta Phoenix in the Train's Women's Football Alliance home opener Saturday night at Hixson High School. The Train (1-1) host the Cincinnati Sizzle at 7 p.m. this Saturday.
