NASHVILLE -- After months of wrangling, a bill limiting the amounts of pseudoephedrine-based cold medicines Tennesseans can buy without a prescription is on its way to Gov. Bill Haslam.

Senators voted to adopt a conference committee's recommendations on a 26-5 vote. House members approved it earlier approved it on a 80-16 vote.

The aim is to limit the amounts of pseudoephedrine, which drug dealers use to manufacture illegal methamphetamine.

The conference committee largely went along with provisions in the House-backed version. That restricts the amount of psuedoephedrine a consumer can purchase monthly without a prescription is about 5.76 a month and no more than 28.8 grams per year.

The bill's limits are about half of what Haslam originally proposed.
