DALTON, Ga. - Dalton's tennis teams were among five area teams that claimed wins on the first day of the Region 7-AAAA tennis tournament at Lakeshore Park on Wednesday.

The Catamount boys will face Northwest Whitfield this morning when play starts at 10 a.m., while Heritage's boys are on the other half of the draw and will face River Ridge, who was the top seed from the South subregion. Everybody that won matches on Wednesday is guaranteed a spot in the state playoffs.

In addition to the boys' teams, the Dalton girls along with LaFayette's girls had wins.

"Our girls showed up, and so did our boys today," Dalton coach David Hilley said. "It's nice that we have that top seed because we don't have to play one of the better teams. I thought the girls were going to have a hard time with Pickens, but they played well and we got a good win."

The Lady Catamounts (9-9) defeated Pickens 3-0, which was the same final as the boys' match against Gilmer County. Jacob Johnson and Shazman Ali had singles victories for the Dalton boys (14-4), while Will Alderman and Ryan Harper had a doubles victory. The Dalton girls had a win from Sydney Tankersley in singles, while Caroline Calfee and Mackenzie Creswell, and Mary Margaret Snipes and Shelby Fromm combined for doubles victories.

The Bruins earned two of their three wins in doubles, as Cody Bourff and Blake Frankenburg and Santi Angel and James Zhong had wins. Troy Poe had the team's lone singles win.
