Tigers, Cougars split TCCAA wins in Cleveland doubleheader

Chattanooga State and Cleveland State split their TCCAA baseball doubleheader Friday in Cleveland.

The visiting Tigers assured themselves of winning the series with a 3-2 victory in Friday's first game, but the Cougars prevented a sweep by taking the finale 8-5.

Ryan Whitt homered, Brandon Day was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and Brennan Swindoll pitched a six-hitter in the win for Chattanooga State (25-14, 16-11). Zack Janes was 3-for-3 and scored a run and Dalton Rogers and Chris Caffrey had the RBIs for the Cougars (25-21, 12-15).

Rogers was 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs in game two, when Keith Buckhalt was 2-for-2 and scored twice and Janes was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run. Michael Goss was 2-for-2 with an extra-long homer and three runs for the Tigers, Sheldon Brogden also was 2-for-2, Jaen Paul Rodriguez was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Jay Rhoten was 1-for-1 with two walks and two RBIs.

Lee University's Gulf South Conference game at Valdosta State was rained out.

• Union College 6-3, Bryan 5-1: At Barbourville, Ky., the host Bulldogs dropped the Lions to 26-22 overall and 12-11 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference with Friday's sweep.

Cody Rhinehart drove in three runs and Justin Morhardt homered in the first game for Bryan, and Grant Zawadzki was 5-for-5 in the doubleheader. He was 3-for-3 and scored the Lions' run in game two, when Kelvin McMiller was 1-for-2 with the RBI, Rhinehart was 2-for-2 and Chad Burrows pitched a six-hitter with two earned runs. Milligan leadoff batter Justin Elder was 4-for-7 with a homer, three runs and three RBIs for the day.

• Maryville 9, Covenant 0: At Maryville, Perry Rigby went 3-for-4 but was the only Covenant player with a hit off the host Scots' Trevor Brackett in the USA South game. Maryville (15-17, 10-12) scored seven runs on eight singles off Garrett Kriston (6-2) in the second inning, and Garrett Gresham was 4-for-5 while Landon Talley had three RBIs for the winners. Covenant (21-12, 15-7) dropped to second place in the league.

• Hendrix 7, Sewanee 3: At Sewanee, Zack Zutton and Nate Barnett each had two hits and scored a run for the host Tigers (11-24, 1-19) in the Southern Athletic Association loss, and Michael Walker hit a two-run triple in the three-run sixth inning. Spencer Summers had two hits and three RBIs for Hendrix (21-15, 11-8).
