Lee University to host math events

CLEVELAND, Tenn. - The Department of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at Lee University will host a high school math competition from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday, according to a news release.

Teams of five to seven students, including representatives from all four grade levels, will compete on an exam covering concepts included on the ACT or SAT such as arithmetic, algebra, geometry, probability and statistics. Scholarships to Lee University and other prizes will be awarded to top scorers, the release stated.

The competition is funded in part by the Mathematical Association of America's Dolciani Mathematics Enrichment Grant Program. It is part of the Science and Mathematics Research Symposium on Friday and Saturday, which will highlight research done by Lee University's math and science majors.

Two die in Monroe County house fire

MADISONVILLE, Tenn. - Authorities say a Monroe County house fire has claimed the lives of an elderly woman and her son.

According to WATE-TV, three fire departments within the county were dispatched to the blaze in Madisonville about 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

Officials say 86-year-old Louise Turner and 51-year-old William Vincent Turner were killed in the blaze.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire.

Alabama trooper, 2 suspects wounded in battle

HARTFORD, Ala. - An Alabama State Trooper was hospitalized in stable condition after he was wounded in a gunbattle that also left two suspects injured on a Southeast Alabama road.

Trooper Lee Phillips was pulling over a Toyota for a traffic violation on County Road 57 in Geneva County when the vehicle came to an abrupt stop and two men got out and opened fire on the trooper, who returned fire, authorities said.

Despite his injuries, Phillips was able to apprehend one of the suspects, authorities said. The other ran away but soon was captured.

Both suspects were wounded and taken to hospitals. Their conditions weren't immediately known.

Phillips was listed in stable condition at Flowers Hospital on Saturday night, a State Patrol spokesman told The Dothan Eagle.

Body of burned woman found in Alabama

FAIRFIELD, Ala. - Police in Fairfield, Ala., are investigating after firefighters discovered the burned body of a woman behind a vacant home.

Al.com reported that evidence indicates that the woman was killed elsewhere and her body was discarded at the vacant home.

Fairfield Fire Chief Leon Davis said the body was found about 11:30 a.m. Saturday on 40th Street. He said the firefighters and police found the body when they responded to a blaze behind the home.

The woman is described only as a white female. Davis said she was burned badly and they have not yet been able to identify her or the cause of death.

Few other details were available Sunday.
