UTC Mocs golfers five back in SoCon event — and more Chattanooga region sports news

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's golf team is in third place and five shots off the lead heading into the final round of the Southern Conference tournament today at the National Golf Club at Pinehurst, N.C. Western Carolina leads at even-par 576, Georgia Southern is at 580 and UTC is at 581. UTC senior Chris Robb is tied for fourth individually at 1-under 143. WCU's J.T. Poston leads at 134, eight strokes better than his nearest competitors. UTC senior Davis Bunn had a 14-shot improvement to 67 from his first to second round.

• Lee University leads the Gulf South Conference women's golf tournament after the first round Monday at the Tunica (Miss.) National Golf Club. Sophomore Bernadette Little and freshman Cori Burns led the Lady Flames to a 305 round with a 75 and a 76 that both included eagles -- and tied them for second and fifth place -- and senior Courtney Shelton and junior Madison Alexander shot seventh-place 77s. West Florida is second in the seven-team event at 306, and West Georgia is third at 310.

• Lee is fourth out of 10 teams in the Gulf South men's golf tournament after two rounds Monday at the Tunica Golf and Tennis Club. The Flames are at 576, two shots behind West Florida and six behind leader Delta State. Lee's Shea Sylvester is fourth individually at 138 after a second-round 68, and Hunter Vest and Taylor Davis are tied for 12th at 145 with Adam Wright tied for 18th at 148.

• Austin Peay sophomore Jessica Cathey from Soddy-Daisy made the All-Ohio Valley Conference women's golf team announced Monday. She finished the regular season with a team-best 77.8 stroke average.

Softball

• UTC sophomore Katie Henderson was announced Monday as the Southern League softball pitcher of the week. The Kentucky transfer from Silverdale Baptist Academy was 2-0 with both wins, one in relief, in the weekend sweep of Middle Tennessee State. She's 14-8 with 120 strikeouts and a 1.88 earned run average for the season.

• Bryan College's Heather Daniel, Heidi Daniel, Kaitie Sims and Becca Zimmerman and Tennessee Wesleyan's Lindsay Arndts were among the 18 players on the Appalachian Athletic Conference all-conference softball team for 2014, and Wesleyan's Courtney Gobble was the AAC's Gold Glove infielder. The league tournament begins today in Kingsport, Tenn.

Tennis

• Tennessee Wesleyan senior Ekaterina Vezhenkova from St. Petersburg, Russia, was the AAC women's tennis player of the year, and teammate Beatriz Signori joined her on the all-conference team along with Milligan College sisters Kayla and Ahmee Kelly from Arts & Sciences in Chattanooga. Milligan won the AAC regular-season championship and will compete in the NAIA national tournament. Another CSAS graduate at Milligan, Jackson Lenoir, made the men's All-AAC team along with Wesleyan's David Escobasa and Fransico Gallardo.

Baseball

• Paul Phillips and Will Cleland each had two hits, scored two runs and batted in three as the Covenant College baseball team beat visiting Tennessee Temple 12-8 on Monday. Phillips homered and tripled and Cleland doubled twice for the Scots (23-13), who also got two hits apiece from Chris Rollins, K.C. Simons, Perry Rigby and David Lockwood. For Temple (11-18), Dylan Massengill was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, Trey Hill was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run, Dustin Crumley and Jake Stone each had an RBI with two hits and Austin Layne had two RBIs.

• Cleveland State finished its baseball regular season by defeating the University of the Cumberlands junior varsity 10-7 and 3-0 Monday in Cleveland. Kevin Carr allowed one hit and struck out seven batters in six innings in the second game for the Cougars, and Brandon Leonard got the save with a one-hit seventh. Jake Wright was 2-for-3 and Clay Hetland and Dalton Rogers had RBIs. Chris Caffrey, Anthony Hunt, Zach Janes, Evan Speicher, Rogers, Michael Allen and Wright had RBIs in game two.
