GA dentist sentenced in tax evasion scheme

COLUMBUS, Ga. - Federal prosecutors say a dentist convicted in a tax evasion scheme has been ordered to serve time in prison and pay restitution.

Authorities say Dayo Obebe of Muscogee County was sentenced Tuesday to a year and one day in prison.

Prosecutors say Obebe was licensed to practice in Georgia and Alabama and began hiding money he earned from patients who paid with credit cards in 2004.

Authorities say he funneled credit card payments into a separate bank account from cash and check payments, and underreported his income between 2004 and 2006.

Investigators say Obebe initially told authorities that his offices didn't accept credit card payments. Obebe is ordered to pay more than $189,000 in restitution.
