5-at-10: Braves lose again, Hard Knocks, Coaching changes, unbreakable records

Happy Wednesday. It's not as good as Thursday, but better than Tuesday.

From the "Talks too much" studios, don't, don't, don't let it start... this is the worst part.

Braves stink

The Atlanta Braves have dropped seven in a row after a 4-2 loss to Felix Hernandez and Seattle.

The good: The Braves allowed only one earned run, which is nice. And King Felix was awesome - needing 97 pitches in eight innings, allowing just one earned run and four hits.

The bad: When things turn sour, they really turn. Atlanta seems to be inventing ways to lose now, the latest coming after Tommy La Stella's fourth-inning error that led to three unearned runs. For an offense that has been as consistently inconsistent as these Braves, three unearned runs is a tall hurdle. Against King Felix, it's an impossibility.

The Upton: Since Dan Uggla is a normal Joe, well, we need a new foil. Hello Stinky Upton. B.J. did not play Tuesday, but sits at .211 for the season. In the current losing streak, Stinky is 3-for-26, and that's with skipping Tuesday's nightmare against Hernandez.

Hard Knocks

The HBO Sports special of Hard Knocks, the football show that follows an NFL team through training camp, debuted Tuesday night from the Falcons camp.

There were several interesting parts. From Matt Ryan looking focused to Jake Mathews looking the part of franchise left tackle to Roddy White talking and talking and talking, the offense has promise.

The defense has questions, though, and how those are answered will be a telling factor in whether the 2012 Falcons (a game from the Super Bowl) or the 2013 Falcons (4-12) will be around this fall.

Also of note, whether he makes the team or not is anyone's guess, but former Ooltewah star and UT linebacker Jacques Smith is taking no bull. Dude was a major part of the first episode in large part because he was fighting with half the offense during drills.

Wojcik out

After a month-long investigation, the College of Charleston fired coach Doug Wojcik for harassing players, staff and athletic department personnel.

Wojcik, of course, will file legal opposition.

That said, and we're certainly not advocating the language or tactics Wojcik used, but it makes you wonder if some of the "Hall of Fame" Rushmore coaches of days gone by would be able to succeed in today's PC World.

Again, if half the allegations are true, it sounds like Wojcik was a terrible human being. But we know we played for some guys who could be pretty insulting.

And we're pretty sure guys like Lombardi and Bryant were far from cookies and compliments for everyone types of coaches.

This and that

- The Spurs hired Becky Hammon, who will be the first female assistant in the NBA. If the Spurs and Pop hired someone, they could be the first teenage mutant ninja turtle on an NBA bench and we're going to trust they know hoops.

- Monster day in college football in today's TFP. Around the site, Weeds looks at UTC's start of two-a-days, Paschall checks in on Georgia and Alabama and Downtown Patrick Brown has two UT stories. Good times.

- Renowned steroid dealer Tony Bosch was busted by the authorities. Dude's a scum bag so whatever. That said, we'd bet there at least a dozen MLBers who had a tough time dozing off last night knowing their names are in Tony's files somewhere. Buckle up for another steroids run of stories.

Today's question

There's a slew of stuff out there you can discuss, and as is policy here, we believe in kudzu and feel free to cover any terrain.

If you need a question, well, try this one. On this date in 1890, Denton True "Cy" Young won his first big league game. He finished with 511 career wins, a number that will never be touched. Never.

So what's our Rushmore of unbreakable sports records - we talked a little about this on Press Row on Tuesday as Rick called in and asked about Emmitt Smith's all-time rushing records (18,355 yards) in today's split-carry NFL.
