Golf Notes: Matt Emery second in State Amateur

Former Baylor School and Lee University golfer Matt Emery is second after the first round of the 99th annual Tennessee Amateur after a 3-under-par 67 at Memphis Country Club, and fellow Franklin resident and Lee golfer Taylor Davis is tied for fourth at 68. UTC's Wes Gosselin is tied for sixth at 69, and local high schooler Lake Johnson and fellow Chattanoogan Taylor Lewis are in the group sharing 11th at 70. Austin Peay golfer Trey Tarpley from Hendersonville leads at 66.


Junior finals set

The Chattanooga Junior Classic finals have been determined after the semifinals were played Tuesday evening at The Honors Course. Sport Allmond will face Jacob Morgan in the highlight event of the day. Allmond defeated Tucker Venable 3 and 2 and Morgan defeated Trent Mansfield 2 up in the boys' 16-18 division. The girls' 15-18 final will match Heidi Barringer and Kaitlyn Sneed this morning on the fabled course. Dylan Lillard will face Jon Morgan in the boys' 14-15 division, and Tucker Windham will play Robert Lyle in the 12-13 group. Taylor Gardner will face Hannah Prescott in the girls' 12-14 final.


Polly Boyd honorees

The Honors Course has awarded five students with its annual Polly Boyd Scholarships: Jordan Estes of Ringgold High School and Georgia Northwestern Technical College, William Frisbee from Ooltewah and Middle Tennessee State, Daniel Little of Ozark Adventist Academy and Southern Adventist University, Titus Osborn of UTC and Nolan (Reid) Smith of Silverdale Baptist and Chattanooga State.

"It's a $4,000 education scholarship," head professional Henrik Simonsen said. "It's trying to help area youngsters, employees or caddies who have helped the club."


Venable wins WindStone

Tucker Venable won the WindStone club championship Sunday with a two-round total of 3-under-par 141. Reese Scobey was the runner-up at 144 and Bobby Vazquez finished third at 147. Sam Hunt won the senior division by eight strokes with a 143. Ryann McCuistion won the ladies' championship with a 161.

U.S. Amateur tickets

Tickets for the U.S. Amateur next week at the Atlanta Athletic Club are available through www.USAmateur.org or for purchase on site. One-day tickets cost $20, a weekly pass is $75 and up to three children may attend for free with one paying adult. The tournament starts Monday.


Area aces

Keith Wilkinson scored his first hole-in-one last Wednesday at Moccasin Bend. He aced No. 3 from 150 yards with a 4-iron with Robert Pettway, Drew Culver and Raymond Chastain as witnesses.

Gregg Bain of Cleveland had a hole-in-one Sunday at Nob North with Tom Trout, Cedric Elliott and Eddie Triplett watching. Bain used a 9-iron for the 119-yard shot on No. 5.
