Lee University golfer Taylor Davis holds a two-stroke lead Wednesday after two rounds of the 99th annual Tennessee Amateur golf tournament at Memphis Country Club. Davis, a Franklin resident, shot a 68 and a 69 to sit at 3-under-par 137. Davis and Trey Tarpley (139) are the only two players under par after two rounds of play. Chattanoogan Taylor Lewis is one of three golfers at even par after he shot two rounds of 70. Also qualifying to continue play today were former Baylor School golfer Matt Emery at McMinnville's Brett Patterson each at 5-over, Harrison's David Weeks at 7-over, Brooks Thomas of Chattanooga at 8-over, and Chattanooga Christian golfer Lake Johnson and UTC redshirt sophomore Wes Gosselin both at 9-over.
Sport Allmond won the most prestigious category of the Chattanooga Junior Classic on Wednesday at The Honors Course. This championship tournament concluded the CDGA junior series and provides semifinalists a chance to play one of the finest courses in the country. Allmond, a rising junior at Heritage High School, defeated LaFayette golfer Jacob Morgan 3 and 2 in the boys' 16-18 division. Kaitlyn Sneed of Meigs County defeated Boyd-Buchanan senior Heidi Barringer 1-up to win the girls' 15-18 division. Tucker Windham defeated Robert Lyle 5 and 3 in the boys' 12-13 division. Evan Spence defeated Dylan Lillard, 3 and 2 in the boys 14-15 group. Taylor Gardner defeated Hannah Prescott 5 and 3 in the girls' 12-14 division.
Basketball
• Local educator, youth coach and former UTC standout Herbert "Book" McCray has announced a special "Covenant Games" concept for middle-school-aged boys that will begin Saturday with 3-on-3 basketball, 3-point contests, motivational speakers and "information about educational, personal and social support." Mentoring will be available beyond the 2-5 p.m. event Saturday at 418 North Holly Ave. in what McCray describes as a collaborative effort of SCORE International, Independent Youth Servivces Foundation, Inc., Chattanooga Youth & Family Services and Second Missionary Services, Inc. According to his release, "Covenant Games has the objective to identify young people at the middle school level who want and need support. ... Members of the community will enter into a covenant relationship with them, providing ongoing support and guidance in the areas outlined below: Grow in the knowledge of Christ; be supported educationally; foster peace within themselves and in the community."
Volleyball
• Silje Thoresen's first volleyball practice with her new Cleveland High School team was a week ago, less than 24 hours after the exchange student from Norway arrived at the Chattanooga airport, but she was surprised by her new teammates the day before with a "decorated locker, pizza party and gifts galore," according to coach Patricia Flowers. The junior will be spending one year as a Lady Raider. Asked about her first week in the United States, she said, according to Flowers, "It's nothing like I expected -- and better than I could've ever dreamt about!"
