A reunion of former area Golden Gloves boxers went so well last year that another is being held on Aug. 23 at the Henry Luken Arena in Red Bank. And this one's even better: It's free, including the lunch of hamburgers, hot dogs, etc. The event will last from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. that Saturday, and former boxers and family members are welcome to stay for as little or as much of it as they can. "We had over 100 last year, and we're looking for at least that many again," organizer and longtime local coach Skipper Fairbanks said Tuesday. "We'll serve lunch at noon."

• Charlie Glenn, a two-way tackle for the undefeated 1962 state champion and nationally No. 2-ranked Central High School football team, died recently, and a private celebration of his life is planned for Aug. 23 in Chattanooga. Glenn was living in Dadeville, Ala. He played for Auburn University and briefly for the New York Giants, his NFL career cut short by a collection of injuries. "In addition to being an excellent football player, Charlie was a really fine person," Central teammate Harry Phillips recalled. "That whole team, that's why we played so well: We supported each other, and Charlie was right in the mainstream of that." Central fullback Tom Turner grew up with Glenn in East Lake, and they remained close friends until Glenn's death. "I heard it said that he was one of the fastest linemen who played at Auburn," Turner said. "He was really fast for a big ol' guy. He weighed 270 pounds in high school, but he could run with the backs. When we did wind sprints, he ran with the backs instead of the linemen." Turner said another memorial gathering involving old teammates and friends will be held later. "Charlie was just a super guy," he said.
