In addition to Clynt Bell from Dade County and fellow freshman guard Deshawn Ruffin from The Bolles School in Jacksonville, Fla. -- both of whose signings were previously reported -- Dalton State men's basketball coach Tony Ingle introduced four transfers this week as part of his second Roadrunners roster. DSC went 26-4 last year in the school's first basketball season after a 35-year hiatus and its first ever as a four-year school. The new transfers include 6-foot-8 senior Isaiah Mossey from Louisiana Tech, which went 29-7 last year as he played in 31 games with three starts. He averaged 18.6 points, 10.2 rebounds and four assists as a senior at Union Grove High School in McDonough, Ga. Danny Alston II, Chris Jones and Jamaine Burrey are 6-foot-1 and 6-2 junior guards who came to the Roadrunners from junior colleges. Burrey, from Florida State College, averaged 26.7 points, 7.1 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 2.3 steals a game at Hardaway High in Columbus, Ga. Alston averaged 20 points and five rebounds and hit 55 percent of his 3-point shots as a 12th-grader in Jacksonville, Fla., and made the MCAC All-Northern Division last season for Fond Du Lac Tribal College in Minnesota. Jones averaged 12.9 points last year for Southwest Mississippi Community College after scoring 16.4 a game with 40 percent 3-point shooting and 88 percent free-throw accuracy at Briarcrest Christian in Memphis. Bell totaled 1,800 points at Dade County, including 799 as a senior, when he led the Chattanooga area in scoring. The Roadrunners also bring back most of last year's instant-success team, including leading scorer Ricky Sears (16.2 ppg) and top rebounder Demetrice Jacobs (7.6 rpg). Their season starts Nov. 10 at Life University in Marietta, and they host Erskine the next night.

• Two-year reigning Kellogg's Angler of the Year Andy Morgan of Dayton, Tenn., is in eighth place in the FLW Walmart Tour's lucrative Forrest Wood Cup bass tournament on Lake Murray in South Carolina. While Philip Jarabeck supplanted his uncle and fellow Lynchburg, Va., resident David Dudley in first place with his 17-pound total for five keepers Friday -- giving him 26 pounds, 4 ounces for two days -- "Mr. Consistent" Morgan added 10-4 to his opening 12-10. Brent Ehrler of Redlands, Calif., is second at 25-12, and Bryan Thrift of Shelby, N.C., is third at 25-0. Dudley fell to sixth at 23-15, behind Michael Wooley of Collierville, Tenn., and Jacob Wheeler of Indianapolis. Brad Knight of Wartburg, Tenn., is 16th at 19-4 and also will be among the 20 pros fishing today for spots in the final 10 on Sunday. The winner gets $500,000. Baseball

• Former Calhoun (Ga.) High School baseball standout Charlie Culberson had perhaps his best game as a major leaguer Thursday night in the Colorado Rockies' 7-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds. Culberson, who has played several positions for the Rockies and was at shortstop Thursday, was 2-for-4 and scored twice in raising his season batting average to .189, and his three-run home run in the fifth inning gave them a 7-2 lead. That was his third homer of the year -- his first since June 29 -- and gave him 18 RBIs in 73 games. "Charlie has been grinding all year," manager Walt Weiss said in an MLB.com posting. "That's a tough role to be in -- to just play every once in a while and play multiple positions. ... Charlie had the big blow, that's good to see." He's played a lot more often with the injuries to All-Star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki.

• Chattanooga State's annual fall instructional baseball league for high-school-age players starts Monday evening, and coach Greg Dennis said Friday that room remains for "four or so" additional participants. Games will be played Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays until Sept. 29. Anyone interested can call Dennis at 697-2418.
