Home & Remodeling Expo this weekend - Aug 23, 24

Grand prize at this weekend's Home & Remodeling Expo is a new backyard. If your mind simply envisions greener grass, think grander.

According to the Home Builders Association of Greater Chattanooga, sponsor of the expo, the prize package features gifts designed to transform a meager plot into an outdoor living area that will be the envy of the neighbors.

Included are a three-piece wicker furniture set, hanging wicker chair, large planting pots, plates and decor, all from Southeastern Salvage; patio table and chairs from Home Depot; gas grill from 2J Construction; fire pit from McKinley Supply; outdoor rug from FloorMax; a flag and flag stand from American Machine Shop; and landscape design from Cumberland Landscape Group.

The second of two seasonal expos by the Home Builders Association, the fall home show will feature 200 booths showcasing products and services for new home construction, fall fix-ups, whole-house renovations, landscaping, gardening, interior design and holiday decorating.

Hours are 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24, at the Chattanooga Convention Center, 1001 Carter St. Admission is $5; free for ages 16 and younger.

Think the kids won't be interested? Think again. Saturday's session will include a free Home Building Contest using Lego Bricks for ages 4-13. Entries will be accepted between 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., with winners announced at noon. Judging will be based on grade level, originality, imagination and presentation. Local franchise Bricks 4 Kids also will be on-site Saturday, offering a hands-on exhibit from 10 to 11 a.m. and an on-site contest from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m., with judging for those creations at 11:30 a.m. Entry guidelines for the Lego Home Building Contest are fairly specific.
