Funnyman Jon Reep laughs at the idea that an action thriller involving a giant tornado would have his name at the top of the casting list.

"Right. 'Cause it's not a comedy, but my part is the comic relief," says Reep in a phone interview from California, where he moved to pursue a career in film and television, in addition to comedy.

Winner of Season 5 of "Last Comic Standing," Reep has made several appearances in movies and on television, including a recurring role on "Rodney," starring fellow comic Rodney Carrington. Reep will appear tonight through Saturday, Aug. 21-23, at The Comedy Catch in Brainerd.

His routine, he says, will include fan favorites, as well as some new material and a new twist.

"I've added some improv and some interaction with the audience," he says. "It's harder, but it makes it new every show."

Acting is very much a part of his career goal, Reep says. He is currently pitching ideas for sitcoms and reality shows and is always looking for movie parts. His agent suggested he audition for "Into The Storm," and Reep thought it was for a serious part.

He was asked to improvise a scene where he hid under a table.

"I did this whole scene where I just started praying and crying," he says. "When I finished, I got up and said I was sorry."

He got the part and was told then that the part he'd read for was gone and they wanted him for the comic-relief bits, along with fellow comic Kyle Davis.

"He read the same scene. I think they wanted to see if we could do serious first," Reep says.
