Bryan nips Temple in soccer opener, 2-1 and other sports news

The Bryan College men's soccer team opened the area college sports season Thursday night in Dayton with a 2-1 defeat of visiting Tennessee Temple. Under new coach Drew Courtney, Joel Glover scored for the Lions in the 32nd minute from a Gustavo Angel Tamayo assist, and Charlie Boehms scored in the 52nd minute from a double assist by Miles Christian and Dan Branley. Bryan, the 2013 Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament champion, tied for second in this year's ACC coaches' preseason poll, behind Tennessee Wesleyan. Temple plays Saturday at Hiwassee.

Volleyball

• The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga volleyball team was picked to finish fifth out of nine teams in the Southern Conference this season. Samford was voted by seven league coaches to finish first, and Furman got the other two first-place predictions and 56 points to Samford's 62, followed by East Tennessee State with 49, UNC Greensboro with 37, UTC with 36 and Western Carolina with 35.

Cross Country

• The Covenant College men's cross country team was picked by the USA South coaches to win the league this year, following last year's title, and the Covenant women were picked second behind Meredith out of 11 teams. Four of eight first-place votes went to Covenant's guys, coached by Kate Stanford. Maryville got three firsts and 43 points to Covenant's 46 in the balloting.

Baseball

• Shortstop Garrett Dalton from Sequoyah High School in Madisonville was one of 20 new players, including 17 freshmen, announced Thursday as having reported to campus for the 2014-15 school year at East Tennessee State University. "Garrett is a super athletic player who won player-of-the-year honors last year in his district," ETSU coach Tony Skole said in a school release. "He is a solid defender with great range. He plays really hard, and his speed is a great tool for him."

Softball

• Lakeview Middle School student Jaycee Goodwin was on the Cookeville-based Tennessee Mojo 03 softball team that won the ASA/USA 10-under fastpitch national championship in Johnson City, Tenn. With players from Indiana and Kentucky as well as Tennessee and Georgia, the Mojo went 2-0 in pool play and 6-0 in bracket play. They edged the Orange County (Calif.) Batbusters 1-0 in the winners-bracket final and 3-0 in the championship game, both on one-hit pitching performances. The tournament included 44 teams from 10 states.
