Sock hop event benefits charity
ROCK SPRING, Ga. - Paul Smith and the Sky High Band will be the featured entertainers at the Stocking Full of Love's Labor Day Weekend Sock Hop at the Walker County Civic Center in Rock Spring.
The event to benefit the North Georgia charity is set for 7-11 p.m. Aug. 31, with music, food and dancing. There will be contests include best '50s dance, best '50s dress and Hula Hoop.
Admission is $3 per person, $5 per couple, and children under 6 get in free.
Take the family on wild cave tour
TRENTON, Ga. - Get wet, get muddy and get knowledgeable during a wild cave tour at Cloudland Canyon State Park.
This family friendly underground adventure will teach participants about cave formation, bats and geology.

Kayak, canoe season ending
FORT PAYNE, Ala. - There's only a week left this season to rent kayaks and canoes for a float down Little River in DeSoto State Park.
Rentals are available through Labor Day at the DeSoto Falls Picnic Area, seven miles from the main park area.
Hours are 4 p.m.-6 p.m. CDT Monday through Thursday by reservation; 1:30-6 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday.

Overdose deaths down in 2013
ATHENS, Ga. - Officials with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation say an analysis shows the number of drug overdose deaths they handled in 2013 was lower than in each of the previous five years, but overdose deaths involving illicit drugs like cocaine and heroin were the highest over the same period.
The Athens Banner-Herald reported overdose deaths were classified as being prescription only, illicit drugs only and a combination of prescription and illicit drugs.
There were 630 overall overdose deaths last year compared to 729 in 2010.
Judge: No bond for VA worker
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - A federal judge has ruled a worker at the Veterans Administration Health Center in Tuskegee will be held without bond until his trial on charges alleging sexual abuse of a mentally disabled volunteer, the Montgomery Advertiser reports.
Eric Allen, 44, of Auburn, is facing two counts of sexual abuse related to incidents on Aug. 5 and Aug. 8 involving a female volunteer with Down syndrome. A defense attorney said Allen suffered a stroke that has caused mental health issues and cognitive delays.
