Area Georgia troopers get new chief

A Gordon County, Ga., veteran officer has been named commander of the Georgia State Patrol post that includes Dalton, LaFayette and Calhoun, a news release states.

Grady David Sanford Jr. is the new commander of GSP Troop A, whose territory also includes Cartersville, Jasper Paulding and Rome. The headquarters is in Cartersville.

Sanford has served with the GSP since 1987 as a radio operator, trooper and other posions. His most recent position was director of the Capitol Police Division from July 1, 2012, to present, the release stated.

In addition to bachelor's and master's degrees, Sanford is also a graduate of the Georgia Law Enforcement Command College and the FBI National Academy.

Capt. Sanford was born and raised in Gordon County. He is married to the former Raina Mauldin and has two children, Stefanie and Elex.
