Sue BartlettGirls Preparatory School tennis coach Sue Bartlett went back to her native England last week and won singles and doubles titles in the British Senior Grass Court Championships at the All England Lawn and Tennis Club, where Wimbledon is played. She beat the defending champion in singles and teamed with a former world champion to prevail in doubles. Grass is not Bartlett's preferred playing surface, but she had to play one of this year's three British national tournaments to be eligible for the team representing Great Britain next June in La Baule, France. "It is always surreal to play at Wimbledon, even though we played on the practice courts this year rather than the championship courts," Bartlett said. "However, we were able to roam freely around the facility, with only people on the official tours also on the premises, so it was an incredible experience. The grass courts are wonderful and the setting sublime."
• Former University of Tennessee at Chattanooga tennis player Ankit Chopra finished third in the USTA National Men's Open last week in Newport, R.I. He was unseeded but upset the 12th seed 6-1, 6-1 and then won 6-2, 6-0 and edged the 13th seed 7-5, 7-5 before falling 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to top-seeded eventual champion Danny Riggs of Pompano Beach, Fla., in the quarterfinals. Chopra then earned a consolation win over Eduard Irizarry of Puerto Rico. The 2013 UTC graduate was a second-team All-Southern Conference doubles player. "I have played big tournaments like this my whole life, so I know how tough it is to advance at these," Mocs coach Carlos Garcia said in a UTC release. "For Ankit to go out and finish third in his first one is a huge accomplishment."

• The Tennessee Temple men's soccer team lost 3-0 in its home opener Tuesday against West Virginia Tech, while the Temple women lost 9-0 in their season opener at Reinhardt. Allie Hale scored three goals for the Lady Eagles (2-0).
Cycling
• Michael Olheiser of Huntsville, Ala., and Predator Cycling was the Pro/1 overall winner in the Village Volkswagen River Gorge bicycle races last weekend in Chattanooga. His place finishes in the Goss Insurance time trial, the Litespeed Bicycles criterium and the Citizens State Bank road race gave him 36 points, three and four more than Bissell-ABG-Giant teammates Jonathan Jacob of Indianapolis and Mac Brennan of East Jordan, Mich. Other overall winners were Owen Shott of Jacksonville Beach, Fla., in Cat 2; Jedidah Fritzinger of Georgetown, Ind., in Cat 3; Georg Pingen of Jackson, Tenn., in Cat 4; Ryan Hanisco of Germantown, Tenn., in Cat 5; Igor Rudalev of Alpharetta, Ga., in Elite Masters; Madison Joiner of Milan, Tenn., in Masters 40+; Amy Phillips of Chattanooga and Pepper Palace Pro Cycling in Women 1/2; and Megan Heath of Alpharetta in Women 3/4.
Running
• The Dalton State men's cross country team finished second in the Southern States Athletic Conference preseason balloting and had the most first-place votes, four, going into its first season of membership. William Carey led the nine-team men's group with 59 voting points, including three first places, and Dalton State had 55 points to 51 for third-place Bethel. DSC's Lady Roadrunners were fourth out of 10 teams with 56 points, one fewer than Loyola (La.) and one more than William Carey; Brenau got all eight firsts and had 80 points to Blue Mountain's 64. "We are excited and optimistic for both the men's and women's teams," co-coach Margie Bruner said in a DSC release. "The kids have been working hard and putting in a lot of miles." Said the other co-coach, Andy Meyer: "We still have a full season ahead of us with much more work. We had already had to adjust to some injuries, adjust to some sickness and some attitudes."
Volleyball
• Union College beat Dalton State 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-11) in volleyball Tuesday in Barbourville, Ky. Michala Askew had 11 assists for DSC (2-1).
Softball
• Andy Paul was 5-for-5 with seven RBIs and Jeff Garner had a three-run home run and six RBIs as St. Timothy's Episcopal earned the 40-over slowpitch softball Gallagher Cup for the third year in a row Tuesday night with a 20-16 win over Signal Mountain Baptist. Gary Priest and Steven Wright each had three hits and four RBIs in defeat.
