Britt advances in LPGA Q-School and other sports news

Former University of Tennessee at Chattanooga golfer Jordan Britt advanced to the second stage of LPGA Tour qualifying school Friday at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif. Britt, who graduated in May, tied for 49th at 5-over-par 293 while playing the Dinah Shore and Palmer courses. She opened with a 77 and then shot three rounds of 72. Recent Arkansas player Emily Tubert was the medalist at 12 under. Britt, who prepped at GPS and Signal Mountain, will compete in the second stage beginning Sept. 30 at the Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice, Fla. By advancing to the second stage, she earned conditional status on the Symetra Tour next year.

Volleyball

• The UTC volleyball team followed its 3-1 season-opening loss (25-19, 24-26, 25-14, 25-22) to Tulsa in Houston Baptist's tournament with a 3-0 loss (25-17, 25-18, 25-17) to Northern Arizona and a late 3-2 win (25-16, 25-23, 23-25, 19-25, 15-7) against the hosts on Saturday. UTC's two Houston residents were standouts against Tulsa, junior Briana Reid with 11 kills and 11 digs and freshman setter Lauren Greenspoon with 35 assists and eight digs, and sophomore newcomer Kristy Wieser had 10 kills and 11 digs while Catherine Chason had 22 digs and Nicole Sumida had seven block assists. Greenspoon had 18 assists, Reid had eight kills and 12 digs and Wieser added 11 digs against Northern Arizona. Sarah Batterton registered 18 kills and Julimar Alvarado added 15 against HBU, while Wieser and Reid had 12 apiece plus 23 and 16 digs, Greenspoon had 53 assists and four aces and libero Chason and Brianna Guzinski were credited with 22 and 14 digs. Chason was voted to the all-tournament team. The Mocs will host Kennesaw State at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Maclellan Gymnasium.

• Covenant College went 4-0 in its season-opening volleyball weekend at the MckAttack Classic hosted by Birmingham-Southern. The Lady Scots beat LaGrange, Mount St. Joseph and Sewanee by 3-0 scores and edged host BSC 3-2 with Cora Schroeder making back-to-back kills and freshman Schuyler Moore serving back-to-back aces to overcome a 12-11 deficit in the fifth set. Chloe Carlson had 38 digs in that win and 16 against LaGrange and joined Chelsea VanDyk on the all-tournament team. Against BSC, Ginny Moore had 15 kills, 14 digs and four aces while VanDyk and Schroeder had 14 and 13 kills, Christina Argaez made 22 digs and Schuyler Moore had 12 kills, 26 assists, 25 digs and six aces. She had 17 assists against LaGrange, when Schroeder had 14 kills. Ginny and Schuyler Moore had 10 and nine kills and 17 and 12 digs and Schuyler added 19 assists with Stephanie Kirkpatrick's 14 against Sewanee, which went 0-4 in the tournament. Jamie Sue Wilson led the Tigers against Covenant with eight kills, and Sara Jayne Sutton had 18 digs.

• Tennessee Temple's volleyball team dropped to 0-6 with 3-0 losses to Pensacola Christian (25-21, 25-20, 25-15) and Brescia (25-23, 25-15, 25-18) in the Volleydawg Classic at Cumberland University but then pulled out its first win of the season and the first as a college head coach for Mary Willis, 3-0 against Fisk. Victoria Smith had 16 kills and Naomi Posada had 11 kills, six aces and 10 digs in the 25-23, 27-25, 25-19 victory, and Sisten Lipsey and Kiara Govan contributed 17 and 11 assists. Shatoya Medord added 12 digs.

Soccer

• Zach Colby scored all the goals, the last two on penalty kicks, as visiting Washington & Lee won 3-0 over Sewanee on Saturday in the first game for Tigers coach Tony Pacella. Pacella is a former assistant at Amherst, which went 35-1-5 the last two years. The Generals outshot their hosts 18-6 and had a 10-1 margin in corner kicks.

• The Covenant men's soccer team had a 1-0 lead on a Snoopy Davidson goal when Saturday's match against Centre in Atlanta was halted -- after two weather delays -- because of lightning in the area. It did not go long enough to be official, so the Scots remain 1-0. In Memphis, the Lady Scots fell to 0-2 with a 3-0 defeat by Texas-Dallas. All the scores were in the last 28 minutes. Lucy Johnson made seven saves for Covenant, which was outshot 26-4.

Field Hockey

• Sewanee opened its field hockey season Saturday with a 4-3 loss to Ohio Wesleyan at Danville, Ky. Allegra Massey-Elim, Carrie Anderson and Virginia Barry scored for Sewanee, which never led but created ties at 2 and at 3. Janie Spilman, Kat Mulligan and Sarah Barry had assists.

Softball

• A reunion is planned for Friday evening for the Barnes-Rhodes men's slowpitch powerhouse of the early 1980s, and any members of those teams who have not been contacted are urged to call Alfredia Rhodes, the widow of sponsor Phil Rhodes, at 667-6100. Mike Fitzgerald, Dank Hankins, Ben Hogan and Larry Kennedy are among those who have committed to attend the 7 p.m. gathering at the Rhodes home, she said. Glen Massengale, Ron Patterson, Bill Newman, Mickey Robinette and Mel Cornett are some she would like to hear back from, but all from those teams are invited.
