Woman's body found in Hiwassee River

State and local authorities are seeking clues to the identity of a woman whose body was found in the Hiwassee River in Polk County on Saturday.

Steve Lofty, chief of East Polk Fire and Rescue, said bystanders at the river spotted what they thought were remains near Pinhook Landing around 4:15 Saturday afternoon.

Lofty said the rescue squad got a boat in the water and recovered the body. He said they didn't know her age, identity, how she died or how she got into the river. He said there are no active missing persons cases in Polk County.

The body has been sent to the TBI crime lab in Nashville for an autopsy while TBI investigators, the Polk County Sheriff's Office and the district attorney's office investigate.
