5 Whitfield County roads on repair list

DALTON, Ga. - A state grant will pay to patch, level, resurface and stripe five roads in Whitfield County, according to a news release from the Georgia Department of Transportation.

The Local Maintenance Improvement Grant from GDOT and the State Transportation Board amounts to a little more than $800,000. The roads that will get face- lifts are:

• Airport Road from State Route 3 to the county line, a distance of 2.93 miles

• South Dixie Highway from Dalton city limits to the South Bypass, 4.36 miles

• Beaverdale Road NE from SR 71 to Lake Francis Road, 2.87 miles

• Beaverdale Road from Lake Francis Road to Riverdale Road, 3.49 miles

• South Dug Gap Road from the end of the old two-lane section to Cove Drive, 0.7 mile.

"Improved transportation is vital to the continued success and progress of Whitfield County," Georgia DOT Commissioner Keith Golden said in the news release. "This resurfacing effort is another important milepost on the road to an even brighter future for the county, and Georgia DOT is proud to help Whitfield get there."

Resort offers stays to teachers

BIRMINGHAM - A coastal Alabama resort is offering free two-night stays to Birmingham-area teachers who stayed overnight with stranded students during the snowstorm last week.

General manager of The Beach Club, David Clark, told AL.com that managers decided to offer free stays to educators, who went the extra mile as a way to thank them for service that he called heroic.

The Gulf Shores resort is offering free condo stays to 50 educators and the first 25 recipients have already been selected. Clark said managers have been overwhelmed with messages from people nominating teachers they feel deserve a free mini-vacation.

Hit-and-run driver sought

ATLANTA - Atlanta police are searching for a driver accused of hitting three girls in southwest Atlanta and driving away.

Police said the girls were walking along a street when they were struck Friday evening. Two of the three girls were hospitalized with serious injuries.

One girl told investigators the driver may have been in a silver, four-door Chevrolet Malibu. Police said the driver got out of his car, looked at the girls, got back into his car and drove off.
