Lake Johnson wins Sea Island Junior Classic event

Chattanooga Christian School junior golfer Lake Johnson won the prestigious Sea Island (Ga.) Junior Classic this past weekend in a playoff with the defending champion. In his first Southeastern Junior Golf Tour event of 2014, Johnson followed a first-round 70 with a 75 and then edged Jake Fendt of Suwanee, Ga., on the first playoff hole. Johnson, whose home course is Black Creek Club, will play in a 54-hole Hurricane Tour event at Orange Park, Fla., in two weeks.

• Dalton State College signed junior college women's All-American golfer Erika Warzinski this past weekend to the program being built for a launch this fall. Warzinski, a 20-year-old sophomore at Seminole State in Sanford, Fla., finished fifth individually in the NJCAA national tournament as a freshman. The Valrico, Fla., resident was on the golf, tennis, volleyball and diving teams at Durant High School. "I'm extremely excited to add someone of Erika's ability and character to our program," DSC coach Jim McGrew said in a school release. "She has proven her ability to perform at the highest levels of competition."

Basketball

• Point University upset the Bryan College women's basketball team 76-63, but the Bryan men barely salvaged a split of the Appalachian Athletic Conference makeup doubleheader Monday at West Point, Ga., with a 72-71 victory on Derrick Walker's winning shot at the buzzer for the second game in a row. Brandon Cole had 25 points and 13 rebounds, Robert Troino had 18 points and four assists, Walker scored 12 points and Caleb Tuck had 11, including two free throws to close the gap with 41 seconds left, for the second-place Lions (14-10, 9-4). In defeat for the third-place Lady Lions (15-8, 10-4), Kristin Lane and Keila Formont had 17 and 16 points and eight rebounds apiece, and Formont added six assists and two blocks. Alex Tucker and Dereese Owens scored 24 and 19 points for Point (14-11, 7-8), which overcame an early 10-point deficit.

• Armeka Booker from first-place Tennessee Wesleyan was named Monday the AAC women's basketball player of the week for the third time in a row and the fifth time this season. The 6-foot-1 junior from Oak Ridge averaged 20 points and 14 rebounds in league wins last week over Truett-McConnell and Union College and blocked four shots against second-place Union.
