Good For You: Winners of Performing Arts League contest announced

Isabella Vanderhoof, a student at Chattanooga Center for Creative Arts, won the 19th annual vocal competition sponsored by the Performing Arts League of Chattanooga. High school juniors and seniors competed for prizes totaling $1,900 at the contest, held in First Baptist Church. Winners of Performing Arts League contest announced

Isabella Vanderhoof, a student at Chattanooga Center for Creative Arts, won the 19th annual vocal competition sponsored by the Performing Arts League of Chattanooga.

High school juniors and seniors competed for prizes totaling $1,900 at the contest, held in First Baptist Church.

Other winners were Erin Smith, Judges Award, East Hamilton High School; Brandon Middleton, third place, Dade County High

School; and Kameer Dunnigan, second place, Center for Creative Arts.


Two from area tapped for 'Who's Who'

Two area students were among 156 collegians at the University of Mississippi tapped for the 2014 edition of "Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges." The honor recognizes campus leadership, academic excellence, community service and organizational membership.

Kelly Christian Marcy of McMinnville, Tenn., and Kelsey Brianne Maynord of Chattanooga are the honored students.


Two collegians study abroad

Two Chattanoogans are among 200 Wofford College students studying abroad in 2014. The students are participating in what's known as Wofford's Interim, a time for exploration and experiential learning away from traditional academic courses and settings.

Robert Brown is studying in Malta, Monaco, Andorra, Vatican City and San Marino. Katherine Thornton traveled to Namibia and South Africa.

Both are seniors at Wofford, located in Spartanburg, S.C.


Two named deans at Cleveland State

Cleveland State Community College recently hired two new deans. Sal Mirza will serve as Dean of Business and Technology, while Robert Brandon II will serve as Dean for Humanities and Social Sciences at the Cleveland, Tenn., college.

Prior to accepting the position at Cleveland State, Mirza was program coordinator of Human Resources Management, Leadership and Marketing for Midway College in Midway, Ky., where he has been a member of the teaching faculty since 2009.

He has nearly 30 years of industry and corporate experience, including research and development in chemical processes of paper manufacturing for Allied Colloids, Boise Cascade and Buckman International.

Brandon chaired the Department of English and the Department for Student Success at Rockingham Community College in Wentworth, N.C., where he has been a member of the teaching faculty since 2005.
