Lee University men's golf team tied for first in San Antonio Shootout

The Lee University men's golf team is tied for first place two-thirds of the way through the San Antonio Shootout. The Flames scorched the TPC San Antonio course with an even-par 288 in the first round Monday and added a 312 in the windier afternoon. St. Edward's of Texas also totaled 600. Lee seniors Matt Emery and Hunter Vest are tied for second and fifth, respectively, at 146 and 147. Emery's 69 was the best score of the first round, and Vest was one behind. Teammates Taylor Davis and Shea Sylvester are at 153 and 155.

• The UTC men's golf team is tied for fifth with Memphis at 582 after Monday's 36 holes of the 15-team AutoTrader.com Collegiate at Berkeley Hills Country Club in Duluth, Ga. Auburn leads with a 572, followed by Kentucky State and Georgia State at 577 and Middle Tennessee State at 580. UTC's Davis Bunn shot two 72s and is tied for 10th at even par, while Ewan Scott is at 145, Wes Gosselin at 146, Chris Robb at 149 and Liam Johnston at 151.

• The UTC women's golfers are 10th out of 13 teams after two rounds in the Central District Invitational at Lakewood Ranch, Fla. They shot 292-302 and are seven shots behind ninth-place Notre Dame, with Central Florida leading at 561. The Mocs' Jordan Britt is tied for 24th invidually at 146, and Emily McLennan, Agathe Sauzon and Isabella Loza are at 148, 149 and 153.

Softball

• UTC sophomore outfielder Sam Taylor from Gordon Lee High School was the Southern Conference women's softball player of the week after batting .500 with nine hits, four runs batted in and four scored as the Mocs went 3-2 in the UNLV Easton Desert Classic. She went 3-for-4 with a combined three doubles and three RBIs in wins over Nevada and Portland State. UTC hosts the Frost Classic this weekend.

• Sara Kelley from Ooltewah High School is batting .542 with 16 RBIs through eight games for the Carson-Newman softball team after going 5-for-7 with two doubles, three RBIs and three runs scored in a 6-4 loss and a 9-5 win Monday against visiting Georgia College. Kelley drove in three of the Lady Eagles' runs in the loss, when Caitlyn Lance from Ridgeland had the other RBI and Ooltewah's Jessica Morgan was 2-for-4. Lance and Morgan each was 1-for-2 with two walks in the win, scoring three runs between them, and Hayley Burnette from Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe was 1-for-2 with two RBIs.

• Bryan College beat visiting Tennessee Temple in two shortened softball games Monday. Taylor Yates was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Heidi Daniel was 2-for-3 with four RBIs in a 15-1 victory, when Rachel Kirby batted in two runs and scored three, Olivia Gore and Nichole Capo each went 2-for-3 and Shanna Chappell pitched a five-inning two-hitter. Sarah Hundley and Kaitie Sims pitched a 12-3 win in which Heather Daniel was 2-for-4 with a triple and four RBIS, Heidi Daniel homered and doubled, Jill Davis was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Kirstie Jennings was 3-for-4 with two runs.

Swimming & Diving

• Sewanee freshman Caty Hueske was named the Southern Athletic Association women's swimming newcomer of the year after earning 52 points, fifth among all females, in the league meet this past weekend in Birmingham. She won the 100-yard backstroke and finished second in the 200 back. Senior teammate Astrid Escobar won the 100 and 200 breaststrokes, the latter with an SAA record time of 2:20.31, and joined Hueske, Mallory Graves and Erin Neil for a runner-up finish in the 200 medley relay. Hueske, Escobar, Neil and Carolyn Rice were second in the 400 medley relay, and Rice was third in the women's 200 individual medley. Sewanee's Edward Dennis won the men's 400 IM after finishing fourth in the 200 IM, Forrest Mayer was second in the men's 100 breast, Brian Glatt was second in the 200 freestyle by 0.02 second and Mac McNally was the 1650 free runner-up. McNally, Jackson Cromer, Michael Whitehead and Glatt were second in the 800 free relay, and Cromer, Whitehead, Dennis and Glatt were third in the 400 medley relay. GPS graduate Mary Portera of Rhodes won the women's 1- and 3-meter diving events, making her diver of the year and an SAA champion two years in a row. Sewanee's Grace Cobbs was her 1-meter runner-up.

Lacrosse

• Michael Morris had four goals and three assists as the Sewanee men's lacrosse team opened its season Sunday with a 14-10 win over Colorado College in Memphis. Matthew Stiefel had three goals and an assist and Sewanee goalies Tommy Healy and Selby Austin made seven and six saves. Morris, the league's reigning offensive player of the year, was honored Monday as the SAA men's offensive player of the week. Sewanee's Alexis Crittenden, the 2013 SAA top defensive player, was the first women's defensive honoree of this season.
