A Chattanooga 2-year-old is being treated at a local hospital after falling onto a sidewalk Monday afternoon from a window in a third-story Walnut Commons apartment downtown.

Witnesses said it appeared as if the window screen partially popped out as the child fell more than 20 feet to a sidewalk near Little Miss Mag Early Learning Center, which is located on the first floor of Walnut Commons.

Child-care workers at the center immediately responded, carrying the young boy inside where he was quickly joined by his mother until first responders arrived.

By that time, witnesses said, the boy was breathing and crying.

The child was admitted to T.C. Thompson Children's Hospital at Erlanger, where he was being treated Tuesday. His condition was unavailable.

While EMS and the Chattanooga Fire Department were involved in the response, the Chattanooga Police Department was not dispatched to the scene, police spokesman Officer Timothy McFarland said.

The child was not a student at the child-care center, Little Miss Mag workers said.

Walnut Commons, a new complex near the south end of the Walnut Street Bridge, opened late last year. Managers for the complex did not return requests Tuesday seeking information about the windows.

Unintentional falls have been the leading cause of injury in children ages 1 to 4 over the past decade, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

They also are the sixth-highest cause of death in that age range, with 576 deaths over the past 10 years.
