The stage is set for Southeast Tennessee's May 6 partisan primaries. Qualifying closed at noon Thursday.

In Hamilton County, 58 candidates will run for 31 partisan county races. The field includes 41 Republicans, 16 Democrats and one Independent candidate.

There will be Republican primary contests for nine posts including Chancery Court judge part 1, Circuit Court clerk, Circuit Court judge division 1, county mayor, register of deeds, sheriff and three county commission seats.

Local GOP Chairman Tony Sanders said the party will have a very brief rest now that qualifying is over.

"There probably won't be anything official until after the primaries. At this point, we will stay pretty neutral," Sanders said. "There will be candidate forums, but we've been so focused on getting to the qualifying deadline, we haven't scheduled anything yet."

The Democrats will have primary battles for three County Commission seats and the Criminal Court clerk race. Terry Lee, the Democrats' chairman, said this is no time to rest for his party.

The Democrats are opening a headquarters Tuesday at 4300 North Access Road, Suite C.

"We are having a series of meet-and-greets throughout the city and the county now through spring and summer. We've got organizing on the ground in communities that we haven't had in the past," Lee said.

Lee said local activity is a reaction to recent state politics and the ongoing drama - and failed unionization - at Volkswagen in Chattanooga.

"I think people are frustrated with the way things are going in Nashville. And the way the union vote went has really energized Democrats here," Lee said.

Republicans Joe Manuel and Pam Fleenor will face off for the Chancery Court judgeship being vacated by Chancellor Frank Brown, who is not seeking re-election.

J.B. Bennett and Catherine Cate White will compete for the GOP nod to fill retiring Judge Jacqueline Bolton's post. Democrat Stuart James is unopposed in his primary for the seat.

Sheriff Jim Hammond is being challenged for the Republican nomination by one of his own sergeants, Chris Harvey.

There will be a three-way bout for the seat Circuit Court Clerk Paula Thompson is leaving. Current County Commissioner Larry Henry is vying for that spot, and he'll be facing Ron Parson and Lisa Bowman in the Republican primary.

Veteran Republican Commissioner Fred Skillern is being challenged by Randy Fairbanks, a certified public accountant, for the District 1 commission spot.

Democrats Kirkland Robinson and former Chattanooga Councilwoman Pam Ladd will seek to challenge District 4 Commissioner Warren Mackey for his seat.

And District 5 Commissioner Greg Beck will have competition in his Democratic primary from challenger Isiah Hester.

The political power vacuum created by Henry leaving his District 7 commission spot has brought three Republicans and two Democrats into the political scene. Republicans Phil Smartt, Perry Perkins and Sabrena Turner will seek their party's nomination. And Ezra Maize and Don Brown are seeking Democratic approval.

District 8 Commissioner Tim Boyd is facing Republican opposition from former Commissioner Curtis Adams and East Ridge Mayor Brent Lambert. Former school board member and Democrat Kenny Smith faces no party opposition for the job.

Even Mayor Jim Coppinger is not free from a primary bid. He faces perennial candidate and one-time viral video star Basil Marceaux for the Republican nomination. Merceaux also picked up filing papers to run for governor. Richard Ford is running in the race as an Independent.

Twenty-year Circuit Court Clerk Gwen Tidwell is being challeged by Democrat Brian White. And Rep. Vince Dean, R-East Ridge, is leaving Nashville and is unopposed for the GOP nomination in the race.

Register of Deeds Pam Hurst is being challenged by Ryan Epperson and Paul Parker, the county's real property manager, for the Republican nomination.

But after the primary, the list will shrink. Twenty-one races will decided in the primary, including 15 unopposed seats - 14 incumbents have no opposition. By the Aug. 7 election, there will be only nine contested partisan races at the county level.

REGION POLITICS

Party primaries across the region will be particularly competitive for county mayor and sheriff. Some counties have multiple contenders for other offices, and many county commission seats are contested.

Bledsoe County's Republican primary for county mayor is a two-man tilt, as is the GOP contest for sheriff.

Grundy County has a five-way showdown for county mayor and a three-way contest for sheriff in Democratic primary. The Democratic primary for trustee is a four-way battle and the road superintendent and county clerk primaries each have three contenders.

In Franklin County, three Republicans are vying for county mayor and two for sheriff. Democrats are incumbents in those races and are unopposed in the primary.

The Democratic bids for Polk County's next sheriff is expected to be a focal point of the primary, said Steve Gaddis, election administrator for the county.

Bill Davis, longtime sheriff for Polk County, is not seeking re-election.

"The most heated election in the Polk County primaries will likely be the four-way Democratic race for sheriff," said Gaddis.

Democrats Keith Barker, Rocky King, Jamie Nicholson and Joe Price will face each other on May 6. Republican Steve Ross will face the winner in the general election.
