Interesting comment. I'm sure, as a Caucasian, you probably don't encounter a lot of hatred, but the fact is that many people s!till deal with bigotry and racism in their daily lives.

How fortu!nate you are to be in a position to consider epithets something you issue rather than receive, and before you even attempt to deny it, I know you do on a regular basis.!!

Your demeanor in here is proof of that!

Seems to me the name "Redskins" is a name the team wears with much pride. Why would a team call themselves the "Redskins" if they thought it was anything other than a term of pride, or at the least something positive?

I would think native Americans would be more distraught over being called "Indians" than anything else. I believe Columbus thought he was in India and mistakenly named the natives "Indians" out of mistaken identity.

The Washington native Americans may be more accurate, but doesn't have the same panache.

Maybe the Norsemen will go after the vikings next, who knows.

Seems the team that offered us the first black super bowl winning quarterback has anything but a "racist" agenda.

The escalation of the Redskins team name controversy is not because of a shift in public opinion where the term has grown to offend more people. This isn’t a case of new found standards of decency. It is wholly manufactured; born by a select people, exercising a political correctness to further a self centered cultural piousness'.

Oh my, who's horribly offended? I posit it mainly seems to bother activists who are offended for a living and for whom it is a source of moral righteousness to be offended on someone else’s behalf (even if no one else is).

Dragging everyone along their journey of political correctness is a trip they ought to travel alone as the vast majority don't give a sh!t -- and that includes Indians.

Whoops, did I just say..Indians? My bad!

Notice how Clay and other liberals said nothing when Obama who has been vocal about the Redskins changing their name invited the Chicago Blackhawks to the Whitehouse after winning the Stanley Cup.

These same liberals are so concerned about the name Redskin being used but you never hear a word from them about the living conditions (high unemployment, poor education, high rate of alcohol and drug abuse)the Indians live under on the government controlled reservations.

IT'S A MARKETING OPPORTUNITY

I don't care what Washington calls the team, but Dan Snyder is a smart businessman. The jury is out on his ability to run an NFL franchise, but he's not a billionaire by luck.

Changing the name would be a financial windfall and here's how Snyder could do it. Change the name but keep the team colors. Have the team play half of its home and away games with the new uniform and half with the current uniform. He could call them 'classics' or 'throwbacks.' All of the loyal 'Redskins' fans would go right out and buy the new jerseys, caps, coffee mugs, jackets, etc. etc. etc. That's the main reason NFL teams change their uniforms from time to time and also why they play some of their games with 'throwbacks.'

NFL owners don't care about political correctness, they are only interested in pleasing their fans. They don't want to alienate customers, and if they can do that and make millions through NFL properties, well, all the better.

Why isn't Tennessee the Titans and not the Hillbillies or Yahoos or Rednecks?

February 26, 2014 at 10:08 a.m.

If some black American football players want to call each other ni#%er and choose to play for the REDSKINS, it's of no consequence at all and has no affect on my daily life or anyone else's.

It'll end up like every other liberal run organization. Too top heavy with management, lower participation rates (viewership), Pussifying the game itself (no more tackling). I don't hear those words when I watch an NFL game on TV, I'm not paying attention to that. I don't care. Even when I go to a game I don't hear it. Do you have super human hearing? Who cares.

You guys are totally missing the point of the cartoon. Clay is referring to the double-standard being applied by the NFL. This year it will be an automatic 15 yard if a player is hear using a derogatory term for African Americans, yet we have a team using a derogatory term for Native Americans.

Oh No!! .... Is that really what the toon is about? ... Thank God you showed up and stated the obvious or we would have been discussing the wrong subject all day. After all no one here would want to disregard the toon’s meaning and divert to their own issue to bitch about ... Right?

Oh really, Z? Did you watch any football or even the news during the 2nd half of the season? The Miami Dolphins are still dealing with the fallout of a player not being able "to brush it off". I believe the distractions caused a good Dolphins team to miss the playoffs. And who suffered? The Dolphin Fans. IMO, that is why the "n-word rule" is now in effect. It has nothing to do with the "liberal media" or "libs getting their underwear in a bunch". The NFL (The league or the owners) doesn't want to be held liable for poor player behavior. It has nothing to do with politics.

Native American leaders speak out against Redskins name

" When opposition to the Redskins name first intensified earlier this year, supporters of the name pointed out that Native Americans aren’t offended by it. When Oneida Indian Nation became one of the loudest voices arguing for change, supporters of the name pointed out that Oneida Indian Nation representative Ray Halbritter isn’t a real Native American. (The federal courts have concluded that he is.)

Now, the National Congress of American Indians has joined in the opposition, issuing a video that consists of leaders from seven different tribes: Cathy Abramson, Councilmember, Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians; Al Goozmer, President, Tyonek Native Village of Alaska; Brian Cladoosby, Chairman, Swinomish Indian Tribal Community and President, NCAI; Edwina Butler Wolfe, Governor, Absentee Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma; Leander McDonald, Tribal Chairman, Spirit Lake Tribe; Dennis Welsh, Chairman, Colorado River Indian Tribes; Candace Bossard, Councilmember, Ponca Tribe of Nebraska."

"We’ll now wait for the supporters of the name to suggest that one or more of these people aren’t real Native Americans, or that the name shouldn’t be changed until all or most Native Americans say that they are offended by the term."

There's a song entitled "Everything must change" by Oleta Adams, maybe Snyder should buy a copy and listen to it. LOL

It's Only A Matter Of Time Before The Washington Redskins Change Their Name "Here’s a prediction: The Washington Redskins’ name will be changed. Despite the resistance of Dan Snyder, the team’s owner, public pressure to replace it is mounting and will eventually prove irresistible. The only question is when.

In the meantime, though, the fight over the name continues. The latest development: two members of Congress, Sen. Maria Cantwell of Washington, a Democrat and chairman of the Indian Affairs Committee, andRep. Tom Cole of Oklahoma,a Republican who is a member of the Chickasaw tribe, sent a letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell urging him to take a stand in favor of changing the name. “The National Football League can no longer ignore this and perpetuate the use of this name as anything but what it is: a racial slur,” the letter says.

Cantwell added that members of Congress were prepared to examine the NFL’s tax-exempt status: “You’re getting a tax break for educational purposes, but you’re still embracing a name that people see as a slur and encouraging it.”

Here is my argument, your employer isn't under affirmative action laws but a lot of employers are. The EEOC monitors these companies to make sure they have a fair representation of minorities especially when it comes to promotions. Look at your promotion exams in Fire and Police Departments and how courts have ordered cities to lower the standards on promotional exams and entry requirements.

There are a lot of employers in both the private and public sector that have to follow EEOC standards but the NFL is not one of them.

Politicians know they could never impose affirmative action on major league sports because no one would purchase tickets to watch a mediocre team but they will force private and public sector employers to hire or promote someone who is not the best qualified.

Remember that the next time you call the FD or PD on who is responding to possibly save your life.

White people have never had to experience any negativity surrounding their skin color. Whites are the elite. White people are the ones who have made other races a problem.

I even had a man suggest that Jesus was white, a laughable machination of the mind. He based it on pictures he had seen of Jesus.

"I wouldn't be offended if sporting teams wanted to use white stereotypes like honky, white trash, or cracker. I'm secure in my skin color and that other stuff is not an issue."

"The PC police are out of control. What worries me more is the wussification of America. We were great because we were strong, not because we get our feelings hurt over silly issues."

When you think about it, that was ONLY because white people dominated everything. That is no longer the case. One day, if you live long enough, it may be you banned to the back of a bus.

Sometimes picking off your kind is like taking candy from a baby, so easy it's ridiculous. Tell your dribble about Gays to the nutjobs in Arizona who tried to use religion to get their Anti-Gay Agenda legitimized. They got their a#ses handed to them by the BUSINESS COMMUNITY AND THE NFL. Jan Brewer had people surrounding her who were smart enough to see they were about to cut their noses off to spite their faces had that bill become the law. Even their U.S. Senators-McCain and Flake, knew this was going to hurt Arizona. That's what happens when religious fanatics become politicians. Hopefully, those bozos over in Nashville saw what happened in Arizona and they will let their version of this nutjob bill drop or at the very least Flying J. Haslam will grow some balls and veto it as did Brewer.

Teabaggers like yourself don't realize with all of your rhetoric, the rest of the country doesn't see things the way you do. That's part of the problem within the Republican Party. They want you out but they don't know how to clean house. So, if they continue to allow you to try to put candidates out there that are as ignorant as teabaggers generally are, they will lose and lose and lose. Couldn't happen to a better bunch of ignorant bigots.

"taking candy from a baby" you have an overblown view of yourself...you're just a pie face, fat ass and an arrogant fool.

Nobody got anything handed to them. Brewer went with the money, that's all. Just like all politicians usually do. This is no different. She didn't want to lose the superbowl, or more. Gays are an extreme minority that have a huge influence on hollywood, the entertainment industry(the nfl is entertainment), and politics. Gays are in positions of power. It's simply bullying. Fear of being branded a homophobe or racist.

Nobody in this country really cares what gays do in their private lives. This is America. What they're doing is pure bullying. You, and other piss ant liberals, want to punish and control. You want to wipe out any opposition to what you believe. I say, bring it on.

What you don't understand is the equity the REDSKINS have in their brand. The loss of revenue will be tremendous. Money talks, and that's why the REDSKINS will never change their name or logo. The Washington Bullets changed their name to Wizards. They're not the REDSKINS. Its' a completely different universe.

By the way, just wait until the the mid-terms, you'll see who has their asses handed to them.

Like I said it's like taking candy from a baby. So you find one school that calls themselves the "Red Mesa Redskins" and that supposedly means all Native Americans don't find the word "Redskin" offensive. Now there are rappers who have made MILLIONS AND MILLIONS OF DOLLARS USING THE N-WORD IN THEIR LYRICS BUT JUST BECAUSE THEY HAVE DONE SO DOES THAT MEAN ALL AFRICAN-AMERICANS THINK IT'S O.K. Again you make a generalization about which you KNOW NOTHING. Not in a million years would I have sanctioned putting Native Americans on a RESERVATION. It was the United States Government that chose that path and unfortunately since those Indian Nations could not beat the Military might of the U.S. govt. they had no choice but to move to those reservations. As to why some are still there it is a mystery to me.

Putting Native Americans on a Reservation was just as inexcusable as putting Japanese Americans in Internment camps on the West Coast following the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Maybe that's why Arab-Americans weren't herded up following the 9/11 attack. Somebody finally realized the word in front of American only signified heritage and not that the person was not an American. See for all the teabaggers out there Ted Cruz can claim Canadian born American citizenship. Guess that's why he walked around with dual citizenship for so long. LOL

NFL owners don't care about political correctness, they are only interested in pleasing their fans. They don't want to alienate customers, and if they can do that and make millions through NFL properties, well, all the better.

So your version of “pleasing the fans is to alienate the 80 or 90% of the fan base that don’t want it changed. As an example I know a person that was always a Baltimore Colts fan and then they moved to Indianapolis. He has hated them ever since even though they had Manning as their quarterback for many years.

Just because you don't have your run of the south, like you do the northeast, the pacific coast and places like Chicago, doesn't mean you have to resort to stereotyping. I lived in places up north, like Michigan and Chicago, and I found more racism and stereotyping up there than I do down here. Excuse me, but where is it written that white people have the right or freedom to adopt references to American natives when they are naming a sports team?

Blame liberals if you must, but right is right and wrong is still definitely wrong, and using the skin color of people when naming a sports team is wrong, which is why it is no longer done.

My life will not change one iota if the Redskins are never forced to change their name, just as it won't change if they do. I don't root for them to win...ever.

The NFL will eventually bow to force a name change. It's simply a matter of time.

I'm more concerned with the total lack of respect shown by people when they refer to people of any race, except when describing white people.

That's something you need to work on.

zab the racism you find "up north" is almost always caused by de facto effects, you will find a few rednecks. You can go out west and hear the same narrow minded thinking only expressed towards Mexican or Philipinos or Vietnamese. You come down south to places like this and you find people who may be a bit more educated than they were in the 1850's but they haven't let go of the idea that some how they are the privileged class, and some how all those folks who have color to their skin end up being the cause of the discrimination they experience. You seldom escape the racism of your parents and your kids cant escape yours. The bottom line is racism is as real down here as it is up north but it has taken on an economic cast. It is much easier to talk about it usin economic terms because it does not sound as "bad."

No they did not.
