Augustine is Presidential Scholars candidate

Ashley Augustine, a senior at Baylor School, is one of 3,000 candidates in the 2014 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. These students were selected from nearly 3.4 million students across the country who are graduating this year.

She is the daughter of Dr. Mattrai and Molly Augustine.

The candidates were chosen for high performance on either the SAT or ACT tests. After consideration of student essays, self-assessments, extracurricular activities, school recommendations and transcripts, the field of candidates will be narrowed to 560 semifinalists in early April.

The final selection of scholars will be announced in May. These students will be invited to Washington, D.C., to receive the Presidential Scholars medallion and participate in events including a recognition ceremony.

The Ooltewah High School band was invited to the state capital by Rep. Mike Carter, R-Ooltewah, and presented a Governor's Proclamation recognizing the band as an outstanding representative for Tennessee.

Band director Joel Denton was presented the proclamation and every member of the band received a citation from Carter. Denton said it marked the first time a band has been honored in this manner.

While in Nashville, students took a tour of the Frist Museum of Art, toured the capitol building with Carter and had their photo made on the steps of the War Memorial Building, where the Legislature meets.
