Woman faces homicide charge in Chattanooga stabbing

A woman faces a homicide charge after she phoned police to tell them that she stabbed her ex-boyfriend to death, according to Chattanooga police.

Monica Delk, 35, who has no prior criminal record in Hamilton County, remained in jail Monday night on a $300,000 bond.

Delk was having an argument with 27-year-old Charles Brown IV when, she said, she stabbed him at least once in the chest about 8 p.m. Sunday inside her College Hill Courts residence, police department Public Information Officer Tim McFarland said in a news release.

Delk told police she stabbed Brown after an argument. The pair were in the kitchen when Brown began dumping garbage on the kitchen floor, according to the report.

She contacted her father-in-law after the incident. He came to her residence, and she used his cell phone to contact police. Police responded to her home at 1216 Grove St. Ct. Apt. 342 just after 6 a.m. Monday.

Delk's children, who did not witness the incident, were taken into custody by the Department of Children Services for placement in another home, McFarland said. He said they were not involved in the incident.

Court records show that Brown had a history of drug-related charges and domestic incidents.

In 2010, he violated an order of protection and was found guilty of harassment. He had two counts of domestic assault dismissed in court in 2011. Two years ago, he was found guilty of harassment with a domestic enhancer.

Brown's death marked the first homicide for Chattanooga in 2014. In 2013, there were 19 deaths -- including two stabbings.

Delk's next court date is Monday before Hamilton County General Sessions Court Judge Lila Statom.
