Green-led Dalton State Roadrunners improve to 18-2

Ladaris Green had 23 points, 13 rebounds and two blocked shots Monday night in his second game as a Dalton State Roadrunner, an 87-72 home defeat of Virginia Intermont that improved the first-year program to 18-2. Green is a 6-foot-10 junior who played for DSC coach Tony Ingle at Kennesaw State. Ricky Sears scored 15 first-half points and Demetrice Jacobs and Erich Allen had 12 apiece for the game for the Roadrunners, while Anthony Hilliard had seven assists and five steals. Joshua Hart scored 23 points and Tyrone Smith had 16 points and six assists for Intermont (7-10).

• The Chattanooga State basketball teams played their first games in 37 days Monday evening and beat the Tennessee Temple junior varsities, 68-47 in the women's game and 83-69 in the men's. Demetrius Kitchens had 18 points and 11 rebounds and Dajion Williams scored 17 points to lead the Tigers (10-4), while Orlandis Jackson and Chaunce Watkins scored 12 and 11. The Lady Tigers were led by Tariana Carter's and Amber Howard's 12 points apiece and Simone Smith's and Jasmine Mailoto's 11 each. Kristina Pumpure scored 13 and Shakoya Monroe added 12 for the Lady Crusaders; Tony Sparkman and Cameron Tackett scored 12 each for the Temple guys.

• Middle Tennessee State freshman forward Reggie Upshaw from Baylor School had 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting plus nine rebounds, three assists and two steals in the basketball Blue Raiders' 89-84 overtime win against UAB in their Conference USA opener Saturday. He made both 3-point shots he took, and he responded from a bad pass that led to a turnover and the tying free throws late in regulation with the win-sealing three-point play. The 6-foot-7 Upshaw played 35 of the 45 minutes. He has scored in double figures in six of MTSU's last eight games, when his 10.4-point average has raised his season average to 7.6. "He has a real high ceiling, about as high as any freshman we've had," Raiders coach Kermit Davis said in a school release. "He's athletic and skilled, and he's got a great body. One thing he does is take coaching. He doesn't blink. When a guy with that talent level takes coaching, he's just going to get better."

Wrestling

• Cumberland University sophomore heavyweight Tyler Smith from Sonoraville High School won all three of his matches this past weekend in helping the Bulldogs finish third at the National Wrestling Coaches Association National Duals in Des Moines. Along with earning two 5-3 decisions, the first in a second overtime period, Smith won 13-6 over the NAIA's seventh-ranked David Lopez of No. 4 Great Falls to give Cumberland a 20-18 win. The eighth-ranked Bulldogs went 3-1, including a 22-16 defeat of No. 2 Montana State-Northern. In a 35-12 loss to No. 7 Lindsey Wilson, CU gave up a forfeit at 285 pounds instead of having Smith wrestle.

Academics

• Both Baylor School soccer sides received High School Team Academic Awards from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America for the 2012-13 school year, boys' coach Curtis Blair reported Monday. To be honored, a team must have a coach who is an NSCAA member and have an aggregate grade point average of 3.25 or better on a 4.0 scale. The Baylor girls' team GPA was 3.5; the boys' was 3.45. "This award really belongs to the faculty of Baylor," Blair said in a release. "The faculty go above and beyond to help all our student-athletes. We hold our students to a high standard on the soccer field and in the classroom."
