Meigs County coach Ricky Holliday has resigned after three seasons directing the Tigers.

After three seasons, Ricky Holliday has resigned as football coach at Meigs County.

"I hate it. I thought we had made strides, but I want to do what is best for the program," Holliday said Monday afternoon.

When he took over, Holliday was the Tigers' third coach in as many seasons, following Curt Jones and Stan Eller.

"We have a lot of seniors coming back next year, guys we played as freshmen and sophomores," Holliday said. "I hate it. I love the kids. I've been here quite a while, and the reason I'm here was for the kids.

"You always hope you're leaving the program better than when you got there, but from a win-loss perspective we didn't. The kids are doing well in the weight room and they know the system. I wish nothing but the best for them. They deserve it."

Holliday, who was hired as an assistant coach in 2002 by then-coach and current Meigs principal Clint Baker, had records of 3-7, 1-9 and 2-8.

"Ricky has been a valuable member of the faculty and the coaching staff for a long time," Baker said. "We appreciate his efforts and the hard work he put into the program. He is a really good guy, but it just hasn't worked out and we need to move in another direction."

Holliday will remain on the faculty for the present.

"I'll step back and catch my breath, but while I'm a teacher I'm also a football coach and I do want to coach," he said. "I've got about two months to make a decision."
