EPB warns of call scam

EPB issued a warning Tuesday about an ongoing nationwide utility scam using false caller ID information.

"EPB imposters are calling our business customers from phones that appear on Caller ID as 648-1372 EPB," utility spokesman John Pless said. "Customers are told their service will be disconnected if they don't make immediate payment for a past due account, and are instructed to buy a reloadable debit card like MoneyPak to make payment by calling an '800' number. This is a scam."

Pless said EPB does give courtesy calls to remind customers of past due accounts, but the utility never instructs customers to make immediate payments with pre-paid debit cards. EPB asks that customers receiving these fraudulent calls to please call EPB and report the call.
