Mark Sherrod, who played for the Chattanooga Football Club in 2011, was chosen by the Houston Dynamo in the second round of the Major League Soccer draft Thursday. Most recently of the Portland Timbers U23 team, he was the 32nd player drafted overall. The first former CFC player signed by a professional team, he is remembered for his "Superman goal" in which he stretched out in the air and headed in a score. The Knoxville native and former University of Memphis player is only the fourth Tennessee-born, -bred and -educated player to sign with a pro soccer team, according to the release announcing his signing. "This was one of the most amazing days of my life," he said in the release. "When they announced my name at the draft, at first I honestly did not know how to react. My family and I celebrated and it was a fantastic experience. I am truly blessed to have gotten this chance, and I owe a lot of gratitude to everybody who helped me along the way. ... It seems like yesterday that I took my soccer career to the next step by playing for Chattanooga FC, and what a great impact it had on me."
• Redoubt Soccer Association will have both state recreation coaches of the year honored at the TSSA annual meeting Jan. 25: John Lowery for boys and Robert Milan for girls. "This is a product of Redoubt hiring a director of coaching this past fall to help improve the quality of coaching at our club," RSA's Jack Skelton said. That DOC is Qasim Sheikh, a former Sewanee star player and Tennessee Tech coach.
Baseball
• Lee University's Mark Brew was both the ABCA/Diamond and the NAIA/Rawlings baseball regional coach of the year in 2013 for the seventh year in a row. Both awards were presented at the American Baseball Coaches Association national convention in Dallas earlier this month. Eight days later he was honored as the Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association college coach of the year for the seventh consecutive year as well. That covers his entire time as the Flames' head coach. He has a 377-89-1 record. Lee was 51-12 and finished third in the NAIA World Series last year and begins its first year in NCAA Division II by hosting Emmanuel College on Feb. 1.
Track & Field
• University of Tennessee at Chattanooga sophomore Teghan Henderson won the women's 3000-meter race and senior Mark Cole won the men's 3000 Saturday in the Niswinger Invitational indoor track and field meet at East Tennessee State. With former Lady Moc Gina Recher Rouse her runner-up running unattached, Henderson won in 9:35.19, less than four seconds from Shannon Wommack's program-record time set in 2006. Cole's time was 8:38.88. The UTC distance medley relay teams both finished second, with the women's B team fourth, and the Lady Mocs' Rebecca Greenwall was sixth in the women's mile.
Basketball
• Ish Sanders from Cleveland High School had team highs of 25 points, four 3-point baskets in five tries, nine free throws in 10 tries and five steals and also had five assists in Carson-Newman's 87-77 South Atlantic Conference basketball win Saturday over Coker at Jefferson City, Tenn. That made him 10th all-time in SAC career scoring with 1,640 points, four out of ninth place. The Eagles are 10-4, 7-3 in the SAC.
• UTC women's basketball assistant coach Katie Galloway Burrows will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday at Finley Stadium, and the public is invited. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without. The former Lookout Valley High School and UTC standout will be talking about the Mocs' success so far and previewing Monday's 2 p.m. home game against Furman.
Tennis
• Junior Pavels Grigorjevs at No. 2 singles and sophomore Victor Hoang at No. 4 pushed their opponents to three sets and sophomore Luke Saunders lost in two close sets, but their UTC tennis team lost 7-0 in its 2014 opener Saturday at 50th-ranked Middle Tennessee State.
Swimming
• Both Sewanee swimming and diving teams beat Birmingham-Southern in a home Southern Athletic Association meet Saturday, 171-118 for the female Tigers and 158-139 for the host men. Caty Hueske led off the opening win in the women's 200-yard medley relay and later won the 200 and 500 freestyles, and Astrid Escobar also was part of the 200 medley win and won the 100 and 200 breaststroke events. Sewanee's Emily Gay won the 1650 free and was second to Hueske in the 500, Erin Neil won the 100 butterfly and Margaret Peterson and Grace Cobbs finished second to each other in 1- and 3-meter diving. For the Sewanee men, Brian Glatt won the 200 and 500 frees, Michael Whitehead won the 200 breast, Edward Dennis won the 100 fly and Glatt, Mac McNally, Whitehead and Will Ralston won the 200 free relay by two seconds.
Golf
• David Noll Jr. of Dalton ended a six-year run as the Georgia State Golf Association men's player of the year, but he was only 25 points behind the three co-winners for 2013. Noll, an eight-time winner starting in 2003, was 100 points ahead of the fifth-place finisher.
Wrestling
• Blaike Henry from Soddy-Daisy wrestled the last match of King University's home dual Saturday against Anderson University and created a 27-27 tie with his pin in 2:36 at 184 pounds, but Anderson won 28-27 on the fourth tiebreaker criterion Henry also was a winner by pin in a 22-21 loss to Limestone earlier in the week.
General
• The annual Greater Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame induction banquet is set for March 3 at the Chattanooga Convention Center, beginning at 6:30 p.m., and tickets are available for $35 through president John Farr at 423-875-9282. The deadline to buy tickets is Feb. 20. The event will include 19 inductees and seven special award winners.
